“Ah les gars, j’ai acheté un disque qui réunit Merzbow et Russell Haswell, on écoute?”
Le deuxième se met à courir en rond tout en s’arrachant les yeux avec des cris horriblement perçants.
Le troisième débouche un bidon d’essence et s’immole dans la seconde.
Le dernier s’ouvre le ventre pour se pendre avec ses viscères.
Toutes vos connaissances peuvent aussi simplement vous tourner le dos et partir en vitesse de l’endroit ou vous avez osé passer un disque de Merzbow ou un son de R.Haswell en public. Encore un disque à bien écouter tout seul.
On remet les choses dans son contexte…
Masami Akita aka Merzbow est une des pièces maîtresse de la musique Noise et Harsch Noise, ayant sorti bien 200 disques (oui oui 200) depuis le début de sa carrière au Japon. Un mec complètement dingue (il suffit de voir certaines prestations lives) sortant des disques dans de grands labels (Warp, Ipepac le label de Patton, Planet Mu ou Digital Hardcore, celui des Atari Teenage Riot), des BO pour des séances de Bondage, ou un coffret rétrospectif de 50 Cd culte, la “Merzbox”
Russell Haswell est un anglais clairement moins productif, mais ses apparitions live sont, parait-il, absolument fracassantes. Il faut ajouter qu’il a mine de rien collaboré avec pas mal de grands lui aussi, comme Aphex Twin, Autechre ou des gars d’UR.
La scène Noise, est, elle, un mouvement électronique clairement marginal dans son exposition, mais pas vraiment dans son développement et son expansion… Des tonnes de net labels proposent des artistes Noise qui, faute d’opportunité et d’intérêt de la part des maisons de disques, n’ont que ce biais possible pour distribuer leur musique.
La scène Live est elle aussi bouillonnante. A vrai dire on trouve le fleuron de la Noise au Japon et quelques pays d’Europe (dont l’Angleterre, jamais fermée aux expérimentations en tout genre). Pour le Japon, il est même impossible de passer à coté de ce courant musical si l’on s’intéresse un minimum au paysage musical venant de ce pays. Il y a même des magasins plus ou moins spécialisés dans ce genre de zic. (J’ai été presque traumatisé en allant faire un tour dans l’un de ses magasin là bas, entre la petite ruelle toute noire et cradingue, la musique mise à fond, et le tenancier qui se demande ce que fout un “Gainjin” dans sa boutique)
Bon deux personnalités pareilles qui s’entrechoquent le temps d’un disque, on ne peut espérer que du bon. Le plus étonnant, c’est que ce disque soit sorti sur le grand label WARP, qui, même s’il ne s’encroûte pas, n’a plus vraiment l’habitude de sortir de l’inattendu dans son catalogue. Pour l’anecdote marrante, le CD satanstornade (sortie fin 2004)est référencé comme “WarpCd666″, alors que le Squarepusher sorti il y a une semaine est le “WarpCd151″ je crois bien…
Mais ce n’est pas tout… :

Car la pochette, outre la référence, cache deux trois autres surprises.
Comme on ne peut pas le voir sur l’image si dessus, les informations du Cd sont inscrites sur le carton devant de la pochette, mais avec une typographie qui n’apparaît qu’avec de la lumière directement projetée dessus…
Outre des titres de pistes bien perchés, comme Fend Off your miserable grief, Testicular fortitude ou Track 5 pour la piste 3 et les infos relativement communes à toute galette dans le commerce, nous pouvons lire un “Note : Headphone Listening at Maximum Volume Is suggested”
Quand au contenu du Cd, il propose 4 pistes oscillant entre 13 et 20 minutes, excepté la première qui pointe un petit 3 minutes. De quoi faire.
Première bonne nouvelle, Satanstornade fait parti de ces disques de Noise qui ne se complaisent pas dans l’utilisation de sons agressifs (l’ultra-strident est évité par exemple, ce qui est un vrai bonheur en soi) et va plus se concentrer sur des nappes et distorsions absolument destruites, mutantes et massives mais calmes, controlées et dénuées d’agressivité et de rage.
Il est bien sur impossible de passer en revu chaque titre minute par minute.
Mais il faut savoir que Unlock the Mysteries Of The Sun est la meilleure “pièce” du disque. Du haut de ses 17 minutes, les deux génies dégénérés vont nous transporter dans un paysage fait de multiples couches de sons arides, tordus, défoncés. Avec un vrombissement intervenant vers la moitié de la piste qui a rarement été entendu auparavant. C’est violent mais pas agressif, c’est dur mais exaltant dans le même mouvement…
Le reste du Cd sera de la même tenue, avec des distorsions explosives sur des couches sonores d’une constance et d’une profondeur rare.Track5 étonnera presque avec ses arrêts soudains, ses cuts et autres allers-retours entre silences et sourdes déflagrations.
Certaines triturations donnent même l’impression que les machines “crient” littéralement des voix humaines, le procédé est réellement impressionnant. Les nappes se superposent une a une constamment, nous donnant l’impression d’écouter, plus qu’un déferlement, un vrai mur gigantesque et ultra-épais de sons imbriqués les uns dans les autres. Mais sans jamais nous faire souffrir.
Les boucles sont aussi bien martyrisées, et il est impossible de prévoir ce qu’il va nous arriver dans la gueule.
Le maelstrom de sons semble crier, se muter en flammes ou en frottements métalliques, pour nous exploser sans prévenir et reprendre ses multiples transformations.
On croit percevoir quelques guitares complètements déchirées, modifiées et tordues pour n’en recueillir que la sève. Mais aucun son ne sera clairement identifiable.
Tout est en distorsions et en couches sonores, il n’y a pas (ou presque) de beat ou rythmique marquée dans la structure de ces tableaux. Ce qui aide grandement à la chute, à l’abandon de soi dans ce CD, nous faisant lâcher prise avec toute représentation concrète de la musique, balayant tout les repères.
Car le principe de cette musique (quand elle n’est pas poussée dans l’extrême de sons strident) joue le même rôle que l’Ambiant, ou le Downtempo, mais en version Hardcore. La noise desservie par Masami Akita et Russell Haswell, c’est un peu le Grind-core ou le Hardcore de l’ambiant/Downtempo.
Contrairement aux lives Noise, La musique distillé ici permet, après avoir dominé, absorbé et s’être accaparé le son, il en résulte un vrai sentiment de plénitude, de voyage.
Alors certes, on ne va pas planer dans de beaux ciels bleus, mais dans un amas de métal, de fils, d’électronique, de guitares cassées, de machines. Mais quel pied…
Il faut complètement s’immerger dans ce chaos pour en ressentir les effets et changer littéralement de monde.
Une musique cathartique autant pour l’artiste que pour son auditeur.
A vrai dire ce genre musical est presque une drogue pour moi. J’ai parfois un irrésistible besoin d’écouter de la Noise, comme pour me laver, me décrasser la tête. Et Satanstornade même s’il ,n’est pas le tout meilleur du genre, est celui que j’écoute le plus souvent, peut être à cause de l’absence d’agressivité stridente, ainsi qu’une propension à s’étaler sur 3 fois un quart d’heure. Certes ce besoin n’intervient pas tout les deux jours (heureusement pour ma santé mentale à dire vrai) mais ce plonger dans cet amas de sons est réellement défoulant, stimulant, intriguant et planant.
Alors que les concerts (il faut vire ça une fois dans sa vie) sont vécus comme une presque perpétuelle lutte contre des assauts sonores vous triturant chaque parcelle de votre corps, de vos organes, de vos sens (on s’étonne d’avoir l’impression de toucher le son qui emplit la salle), beaucoup de disques de Noise, et celui là en est un bon exemple, vous porteront dans des territoires qui n’ont pour beaucoup jamais été foulés par vos oreilles. Bien sur que dans cette situation, le casque est simplement obligatoire, les enceintes ne pouvant rendre le tout avec prestance. (c’est même quasiment impossible) Je trouve cela même bien plus agreable à écouter que le bon Hardcore des familles…
Dommage que cette musique soit trop souvent (comme pas mal d’autres courants musicaux) mise à l’écart, en tout cas chez nous (Car bien plus assumé dans d’autres coins du monde, comme dit précédemment… Et je parle de Noise à la Merzbow ou CCCC, qui est pleine de retenue et de controle… à ne pas confondre avec d’autres qui sont coppletements emplit de rage incontrolable, bien plus difficilement supportable)
Pour les amateurs de H.Noise, le disque est bien sur chaudement recommandé…
Pour ceux qui ne connaissent pas, la curiosité peut vous pousser à découvrir un paysage musical expérimental sûrement inconnu.

I have to agree with the previous reviewer and say that I am a Warp label fan, loving Aphex Plaid Autechre Squarepusher et, al. I saw this in a small music shop in Brighton> I saw Warp logo, pleasant packaging. Noticed also the cunning way the track listing is spot laminated on the cd cover. Got home …stereo loud….. hit play….. I nearly had a heart attack… What was this. I had heard some experimental music before this but it catches you by the throat this one. I listened to it all and loved every second. At first I was scared by the noise but by the time it finished….. silence. Everything was so much quieter than I remember… Now I was actually scared of the silence, quite a lot. Next time I gave it a listen It was on a CD Walkman whilst walking around Brighton The clarity of sound was such that I could imagine it was actually being piped out of hidden speakers across the rooftops

Quelques extraits choppable un peu partout grace à google, mais rien de valable, surtout des trucs de 30 secondes pour des morceaux de 15 minutes…

Ah ça ils redemandent pas je te jure. Mais c’est vraiment tétanisant, sans etre violent… Le truc typique quand tu le passe avec un son “decent” (donc pas à fond) ben la personne te diras “il est cassé ton CD ?” XD (surtout qu’il n’y a pas de rythmique en plus) Donc avec un volume poussé au max, c’est juste effroyable quand les gens sont pas prevenus…
sinon oui la pocjhette est zarb, mais le coup des écritures qui apparaissent que avec une lumiere braqué dessus rend vachement bien… 😮
Je ne connais pas le genre noise non plus, mais j’aime bien Aphex Twin et Squarepusher.

Mais si cela t’a donné envie de creuser, pourquoi pas.
Le truc est de se forcer à rentrer dans ce magma qui semble insupportable au premiere abord. Puis au bout d’un quart d’heure, on se rend compte que ce n’etait pas si terrible que ça, et qu’on en tire meme une certaine plenitude…
M’enfin c’est bine l’un des CD, comme le Mr oizo, ou je ne m’avancerai pas en disant “achete le c’est obligé tu vas adorer”…
Donc à tes risques et perils, je n’assummerai pas si tu pense que le CD est bon pour la poubelle, ou si le pense “inécoutable” XD
Sinon shibuya est vraiment le paradis pour se balader et acheter des disques…

Par contre j’irais pas l’écouter tous les matins…
Ah si, si on me forçait à écouter doute la discographie de Lorie & co, je pense que ça serait le premier skeud que j’écouterais, en guise d’exorcisme.
Pour l’anécdote, ce skeud m’a tellement subjugué que j’ai fait nuit blanche…

Ben écoute comme tout CD Warp, il se choppe “assez” facilement… (c’est pas “la baleine” quoi XD)

Par contre evite de tomber sur des extraits, car la musique ne donne que le meilleur d’elle meme sur la totalitée d’un morceau (d’un quart d’heure)
