Un nouvel album de Nine Inch Nails. Phrase qui provoque un vrai séisme dans tout un pan du monde musical, et cela maintenant depuis presque vingt ans… Même si le séisme en question s’est plus mué en simple réplique depuis quelques années.
Nine Inch Nails est extrêmement connu, voir un incontournable du public Metal. Et presque fantomatique, voir totalement absent dans le coeur des amoureux de musique électronique. Chose plutôt étonnante pour toute oreille ayant échouée sur l’une des productions du groupe.
Nine Inch Nails, (NIN) c’est aussi, et surtout, l’histoire d’un mort vivant, Trent Reznor. D’un mec qui ne semblait avoir que deux chemins possibles dans sa vie : Celui de faire de la musique, ou tout simplement de mourir. La mort. Pas celle égrenée dans le gigantesque fleuve de disques utilisant cette dernière comme prétexte pour appâter les foules, virer dans le misérabilisme ou tomber dans le grotesque. Car l’album The Downward Spiral puait la vraie mort, l’autodestruction dans son plus simple apparat. On n’avait jamais entendu un disque sentir autant le cadavre misérable, auto-mutilé, tellement solitaire qu’il en devenait abject.
Mais c’est aussi un grand disque. Voir l’un des plus grand disque de la musique électronique ait pu enfanter. Un enfant bâtard, effrayant, incompris, inclassable. Mais NIN ne repose pas que sur ce thème, bien heureusement. Brocken se complaisait dans une haine, une rage incontrôlée envers tout ce qui pouvait rentrer dans la sphère vitale de Reznor. Ou The Fragile long monument emprunt d’un total renoncement, comme si son auteur baissait les bras, résigné, la gorge étouffée par un mal être indélébile, allant même jusqu’à flinguer son propre packaging.
Puis Reznor s’est, semble t’il, débarrassé de ses démons, de l’alcool, de la drogue, du suicide. Il sort comme un album de transition, With Teeth qui choque par son aspect direct, policé, presque trop apaisé, flirtant avec la pop. On ne sait plus à quoi se raccrocher. Mais Reznor en a fini de parler de lui-même. La musique n’est plus l’effet cathartique obligatoire pour éviter de se foutre en l’air. Alors il va ouvrir les yeux, et parler des autres. Il regarde autour de lui, et pense que tout va mal, pour changer. Il s’imagine une société paranoïaque, dans quelques années, déchiré par un profond schisme pauvres / riches, rongé par la violence, la crasse, la répression, la révolte, les machines… C’est le thème, le concept de ce nouvel Album, Year Zero. La bande son d’un futur noir comme une fumée d’usine. D’un film d’anticipation qui n’existe pas sur pellicule, mais qui va tenter de s’imprimer dans nos tympans.
On peut se rassurer, on est loin de l’édition rachitique d’un « With Teeth ». Year Zero renoue avec la grande classe des pochettes de « The Downward Spiral » ou « The Fragile ». Superbe artwork représentant une cité où belles résidences et bidonvilles mêlés à des usines répugnantes sont séparés par un mur indécent. Cover à l’image énigmatique mais fascinante. Plus étonnant encore, le filtre de détection de chaleur apposée sur le CD, changeant donc de couleur si sa surface entre en contact avec nos doigts boudinés. Un livret gargantuesque avec l’ensemble des textes est aussi présent. On notera enfin le petit sticker cynique, où le US Bureau Of Morality mets en garde sur le contenu de l’album Consuming or spreading this material may be deemed subversive by the United States Bureau Or Morality. If you or someone you know has engaged in subversive acts or thoughts, call. Be a patriot, be an informer ! One nation under god. On ne pouvait pas mieux annoncer la couleur.
Reste une situation à balayer avant de se lancer, et qui n’engage que moi : Year Zero est bien un disque de musique électronique. Plus que ça, un vrai (enfin) album d’electro industrielle. Ce n’est pas, et cela ne sera jamais un disque de Rock / Metal, n’en déplaise aux adorateurs du premier extrait de l’album. « On s’en fout » vous allez me dire, et ce serait bien la première fois que l’on s’évertue à prouver un genre, à ranger dans une case un disque traité dans ces pages. Certes. Mais je tiens à le préciser.
Car plus grave qu’un public « Metal » semblant presque avoir honte de dire qu’il apprécie un album de musique stricto électronique, c’est le fait de voir justement le public electro passer à coté de ce disque, et de NIN en général, à cause d’une étiquette mal apposée, et souvent repoussante pour 95% de ce public. Et c’est justement tout le malheur de la sélection d’un disque en fonction de son genre. Surtout quand un artiste évolue autant tout au long de sa carrière. On a mit le premier disque de NIN dans le rayon de gauche, on mettra tous les suivants dans le rayon de gauche. Tout comme le groupe Archive qui sera éternellement calé sous la bannière Trip-Hop…
Parlons en de l’album, pour faire vaciller les indécis.
Apres l’intro HYPERPOWER !, longue montée en puissance qui se laisse emporter par une vague bruitiste, « Year Zero » débouche sur les deux titres pouvant clairement être taxés de « Rock ». The Beginning Of The End en serait presque classique, avec ce fil de guitare présent du début à la fin, et son refrain rassurant, si il n’était pas détruit par une grosse saturation dans sa conclusion. Rien de très marquant. Mais le mot saturation, lui va revenir.
En attendant, premier « single » de l’album, Survivalism est énorme. Hymne fédérateur, avec son refrain de tueur, son bleep electro obsédant et ses guitares bien appuyées. On sent bien le thème de l’album sur cette piste, décrivant un semblant de révolte, annihilé par l’ordre établi de cette société dictatoriale. I got my propaganda, I got revisionism / I got my violence in High def ultra-realism / All the part of this great nation / I got my fist I got my pain I got survivalism. Sauf que cette chanson, mise en avant, et tout sauf représentative du contenu de l’album. A croire que les deux ont été placé au début pour rassurer, ne pas choquer, ne pas faire basculer le disque d’une façon trop abrupte.
Car dès Vessel, on change de registre, et bien violemment. On marque un tournant, on lache le rock popisant de haute volée pour de l’electro noire, crade, semblant littéralement copuler avec les machines. Enorme rythme, qui va frapper, hypnotiser, sur tout le titre. Reznor, au chant, susurre presque dans votre oreille. Le beat gronde comme une bête sauvage. Le tout en resterait presque accessible, surtout avec le refrain immédiat, si le titre ne chavirait pas dans un torrent de saturations, tortures de boites à rythmes dans ses deux dernières minutes. L’instant est impressionnant. On croirait voir Reznor prostré devant ses machines, tournant de plus en plus fort sa molette à effets, pour nous servir des assauts flirtant avec la Noise. Chaque attaque prend plus un peu plus d’importance, avant de réussir à nous submerger totalement. Du grand travail, comme une punition auditive à ceux qui s’attendaient à un « With Teeth 2 »
Et la teinte façon « no futur » n’en sera que plus présente durant tout l’album. Me, I’m Not, sorte de Trip-hop technoïde, au refrain menaçant, ne s’embarrasse pas de fioriture. On fait dans le minimaliste, le rêche, l’abrupt. Les synthés enveloppant les Can we stop ? déclamés par Reznor tireront presque dans le morbide, avant de s’échouer vers une autodestruction de rigueur, le morceau étant zébré de sons bien agressifs.
Par contre, pour tout fan de NIN, Capital G à du être un petit choc à la première écoute. Reznor se mettrait presque à avoir un accent cockney sur le début de son couplet, en hachant son débit de parole comme un Mc des familles. Mais on n’est pas dans un album de The Streets, et le refrain bien direct est là pour le rappeler. On quitte l’atmosphère métallique et étouffante, mais le résultat n’en reste pas moins excellent et surprenant, malgré son aspect un peu « facile » au premier abord.
L’énormissime God Given pourrait en être son pendant négatif, pervers, sale. Lit de saturations débouchant sur un beat ultra-syncopé, proche d’une House démonté par un psychopathe, ce titre est une tuerie qui pourrait retourner n’importe quel dancefloor un peu exigeant. On est loin des Tubes electro « Ruiner » et « Heresy », présent dans The Downward Spiral, mais le niveau reste très élevé. Quant à Reznor, il nous balance juste des couplets de folie, avec un Hey man / Please don’t make a sound / take a look around / Can’t you see what’s right in front of you ? absolument IMPARRABLE. Et je ne vous parle pas du refrain, avec son synthé affolant, qui vous donne envie de vous jeter contre les murs les bras en l’air. Un morceau immédiat, bien loin de la nécrose industrielle de The Warning. La construction rythmique de celle-ci rendra fou tous les adorateurs de Breaks crasseux, déstructurés, comme Aphex Twin pourrait le balancer dans ses périodes post « Druqks ». Ca crisse, ça fume, ça explose de partout, comme une lave en fusion, du « bruit blanc » emplit vos oreilles, et la ligne de guitare qui surplombe le tout ne fait qu’enfoncer le clou. On sent un sentiment d’urgence étouffée, on se plait à discerner chaque détail, chaque soubresaut de cette fresque malade, difforme.
Mais le point d’orgue de l’album, son véritable tour de force, impossible à rater, c’est ce The Great Destroyer. Après une courte intro assez agressive, genre martelement techno, on tombe dans une pop qui serait presque sucrée si l’on ne se référait qu’au chant, superbe. Mais c’est sans compter sur le fond sonore, complètement barré, gros maelstrom métallique, ou les machines semblent se revolter, sans jamais pouvoir percer la coque rassurante et planante des paroles de Reznor. Mais après un Great destroyeeeeer gueulé façon rock des années 80, le titre bascule dans une véritable orgie Breakcore, qui pourrait vraiment sortir tout droit du Billious Path d’ µ-zic. Le spectre d’un Mike Paradinas est donc extrêmement présent, tant l’agressivité du tout est savamment millimétrée, presque terrifiante après le contraste de la première partie du titre. Passer de la Pop au Breakcore en 10 secondes, avec autant de maîtrise, ce n’est franchement pas donné à tout le monde, et le résultat effraiera n’importe quelle personne aux oreilles chastes. Jouissif au possible, ce morceau, s’il ne peut se prévaloir d’être le meilleur titre de l’album, en est sûrement le plus surprenant, et l’un des plus plaisant à l’écoute. Une vraie prise de risque, plus qu’un simple délire, qui sera de toute façon rédhibitoire pour une bonne partie de son public actuel et futur. Quand au fait de mêler pop et musiques industrielles, voir plus agressif, c’est quelque chose qui m’a toujours fasciné, et qui peut offrir des pièces musicales absolument sublimes. Et bien Trent Reznor semble vouloir me faire plaisir, et attaque justement une nouvelle fois dans ce contraste au combien contre nature avec In This Twilight, même si le résultat final est bien différent de la furie décrite au dessus. In This Twilight, c’est sûrement le seul titre qui pourrait être sûrement défini comme « beau » dans cet album. Du genre à vous fixer la colonne vertébrale avec des clous bien profonds au fond de vous. Un petit chef d’oeuvre. La voix tout d’abord. Cristalline comme jamais. Reznor a rarement aussi bien placé son chant, d’une fragilité bien prononcée. Ici, l’industriel va régner en fond sonore. Le rythme crisse, hurle, sans bouffer le tout. On est captivé par la douceur du chant, et la rudesse de la structure. Puis tout s’envole. Les machines hurlent comme jamais, on se croirait en pleine usine, chaîne de travail déshumanisée, heurtant tout le métal à coup de presses gigantesque. Tout part dans vos oreilles, on se surprend à trouver le tout sublime. Surtout que Reznor vole au dessus de cette masse menaçante. Le refrain vous fait planer comme jamais alors que le tout reste bien agressif. Comme si l’on surplombait cette ville morte, cette décharge futuriste, sans y prendre part. Un vol plané au dessus un gouffre d’androïdes agonisants.
Comble de bonheur, le morceau débouche sur la longue conclusion Zero Sum, qui fourmille encore plus de détails, d’aspérités, d’irrégularités rythmiques, d’une beauté martyrisée par des beats rampants, claquants comme des coups de matraques, s’enroulant sur eux même comme le meilleur d’ Autechre. Un piano fantomatique donnerait presque une teinte morbide si le coeur servant de refrain n’était pas autant emplit d’espoir, de pureté. Mais une beauté littéralement noyée dans ce marasme de sons éclatés, métalliques et agressifs, bancals, à vous percer la gueule. On se re-surprend à se perdre dans cette beauté matraquée, pilonnée par les machines.
Apres écoute, en ayant pris ce Year Zero comme un Tout, le concept, la vision d’une société futuriste, déshumanisée, sous tension, proche de l’explosion, saute au yeux. Ce disque, c’est un peu la bande son rêvée d’un Guunm ou mieux, de la grande oeuvre Texhnolyze.. Dans ses paroles, on ne peut s’obliger de penser à un « Fahrenheit 451 » ou à un « Soleil Vert ». On croirait presque se balader dans des dédales de rues immondes, noires de crasses, sans vie, bardées de tuyaux et de barres d’immeubles tutoyant les nuages. Le genre de ville ou marcher dans ses artères vous expose à la mort. Où le marché noir, l’exploitation et la débauche seraient les seules manières de surnager un minimum. Ce nouveau Nine Inch Nails est la bande son parfaite pour se balader dans les rues de Zalem et sa décharge.
Chaque coin de ce disque crisse, gronde, hurle l’électronique industrielle. On reconnaît le plaisir de torturer ses machines comme dans le disque de RA, les folles escapades Breakcore indus de Mike Paradinas, ou un Throbbing Gristle sorti de la tombe. Et pas de la musique électronique de grand chemin. Même le dernier Amon Tobin ressemble à un disque pour bercer des maternelles à coté de Year Zero. Certains se surprendront même à grincer des dents une ou deux fois, sous l’effet du plaisir d’entendre de grosses digressions sonores après un refrain bien calibré. Alors bien sur, ceux qui ont annoncé ce NIN comme un brûlot Noise expérimental, comme Reznor lui-même, se sont un peu trop avancés. Cela reste pour quelque chose de très accessible pour les habitués. Mais au diable l’obligation de compliquer au maximum une production, le rendu ici est plus qu’une franche réussite. On évite pas les écueils, avec deux trois titres ne servant pas à grand-chose (The Good Soldier, Another Version Of the Truth…), mais le tout reste extrêmement solide.
On pourra aussi déplorer l’absence de petits bijoux vous filant la chair de poule, comme le faisait « The Great Below », « Hurt » ou « Mr Self Destruct » en leur temps, mais les deux derniers de Year Zero bouclent le disque d’une façon majestueuse. On a pas non plus de Shoegazing à la « The Day the World Went Away » , du mainstream comme ?We’re in this together? ou de l’irritant comme ?Only?. C’est plus minimaliste, homogène, mais moins encadré. On laisse les machines s’affoler, et cela fait du bien.
Il est évident que ce Year Zero n’est pas le meilleur NIN, mais comment ignorer un disque qui est au final plus qu’excellent. Au diable les comparaisons avec les chef d’oeuvres passés de Reznor et prenons le tel quel.
Year Zero n’invente rien, ne révolutionne rien. Des dizaines de disques du genre sont sortis avant lui. Mais qui, peut se targuer, ces temps-ci, de nous offrir un disque d’Electronique Industrielle d’aussi haute volée, changeant un peu les schémas habituels du genre vu qu’il trouve naissance dans le Rock ? Inutile de se tourner vers le premier single pour se faire un avis, tant il n’est pas représentatif du contenu de l’album.
Reznor fait hurler ses machines sans tomber dans l’expérimentation stérile. Il rend même la démarche habituelle bien plus accessible pour les profanes, et extrêmement intéressante pour les habitués d’un genre qui se scléroser souvent sur lui-même.
Mais plus que cela, Si Year Zero pouvait pousser certains amateurs sectaires d’electro de voguer un peu vers d’autres horizons, et surtout d’échouer sur l’incontournable The Downward Spiral la mission serait remplie. Le cheminement contraire est évidemment valable avec les amateurs de Métal réfractaires à l’électronique mais clients de ce dernier NIN. Car ce disque est un pont parfait entre ces deux mondes franchement pas éloignés.
Year Zero ne restera donc pas dans les mémoires comme ont pu le faire certains de ses successeurs, mais il peut déjà être assuré sans hésitation d’être une des sorties majeures de 2007.

Etntièrement d’accord et moi même j’ai fait l’erreur de le comparer avec les précédents. De plus dans mon coeur ils sont totalement à part tous styles confondus…bref.
Vivement en live revoir l’ami Reznor en pleine forme! Puis ce disque possède à nouveau ce qqch qui assomme du début à la fin c’est impossible que ce ne soit pas un “bon” NIN…

Ta référence à l’hypotetique BO de Texnohlytze ma fait bien sourrire j’y avait effectivement penser en l’écoutant la première fois et bien que je ne sois ps aussi élogieux que toi sur cette album je suis forcé d’avouer que s’est un “bon” NIN, inoubliable ? non j’irais pas jusque là mais bon tous simplement.
jolie critique, pas seulement parceque je suis d’accord avec toi! tu dis des choses tres vraies sur le parcours de reznor, notamment le fait qu’il aurait touché un bien plus large publique si il n’avait pas été affublé d’une etiquette metal/indus! (une majeure partie de la scene techno/electro post 95 ignore nin…)
je suis passé du rock alternatif/grunge au debut des années 90 à la musique electronique par le biais de nin. j’ai souvent laissé de coté ses productions pour toujours y revenir à un moment! et en presque 20 ans quelquechose me semble evident, reznor est peut-etre l’un des tous meilleurs producteurs sonores tous genres confondus, qu’il m’ai été donné d’ecouter!
pour en revenir à year zero, je trouve qu’il resume tres bien la carriere de nin: retour à un album concept metissé des tendances musciales explorées precedemment. pour un neophyte, l’opus est peut-etre d’ailleurs le meilleur pour decouvrir le groupe. je suis curieux de voir ce que tout ça va donner en live !
Hey je ne l’avais toujours pas lu cette chro! Excellente, comme le disque. Sinon, je pense qu’il restera dans les mémoires celui là, tout d’abord comme l’album de la relance mais surtout pour tout son incroyable univers developpé autour. Dommage que tu n’en parles pas ou du moins, si tu préfères ne te focaliser que sur la musique, en toucher deux trois mots histoire de renseigner les plus curieux.
Moi j’ai l’impression que mrReznor fait pic-pic et, avec sa grosse machine promotionel en plus…, j’ai envie de dire : “C’est de la chiur !”, excusez-moi… o,+
4 ans aprés sa sortie, je reviens sur cet album, et je suis bluffé… autant de richesse sonore, de puissance et de justesse (je sais pas comment expliquer autrement), c’est sidérant et je pense que ce CD est une véritable oeuvre d’art. Chacun y trouvera “son” morceau préféré, mes préférences allant à God Given, Meet your Master et The greater Good (hallucinante). A une époque où nos oreilles sont abreuvées, noyées par du Lady gaga (clone madonnesque à gerber), de pop rock dont le dernier clone-album nous est imposé comme “nouvelle révélation” et d’un rap R’nB risible qui se duplique avec aussi peu de variété qu’une bactérie sur du fromage, écouter un album aussi réussi, intelligent et qui se dévoile peu à peu à chaque écoute est une chance. saisissez la.

je suis passé du rock alternatif/grunge au debut des années 90 à la musique electronique par le biais de nin. j’ai souvent laissé de coté ses productions pour toujours y revenir à un moment! et en presque 20 ans quelquechose me semble evident, reznor est peut-etre l’un des tous meilleurs producteurs sonores tous genres confondus, qu’il m’ai été donné d’ecouter!
pour en revenir à year zero, je trouve qu’il resume tres bien la carriere de nin: retour à un album concept metissé des tendances musciales explorées precedemment. pour un neophyte, l’opus est peut-etre d’ailleurs le meilleur pour decouvrir le groupe. je suis curieux de voir ce que tout ça va donner en live !
