J’allais commencer ce texte par un “on ne va pas refaire un nouveau couplet sur Dose One“, avant de me rendre compte étonné qu’excepté le dernier album de Subtle, le cas Dose One n’avait pas été réellement traité dans ces pages, comme ont pu l’être un Patton ou un Venetian Snares. Pourtant, et à l’instar de ces derniers, s’il y a bien un gars dont je saute sur chaque release comme un mort de faim, c’est bien ce grand malade. Qui semble, ces dernières années, s’être fixé sur son projet Subtle, groupe parti du hiphop, qui balance maintenant une musique indéfinissable tendant vers un maelstrom de genres…
Justement, alors que l’arrivée d’un nouvel album est imminente, et qui devrait placer enfin Subtle dans le panthéons des groupes barrés, Dose One s’autorise, une fois de plus, un projet solo pour respirer, loin de la tornade du groupe précités.
Et le plus étonnant, alors que le Mc a posé sa voix sur un nombre incalculable de disques, et ayant le pied dans presque autant de maisons de disques, c’est que ce Skeleton Repellent a été sorti cette année, produit par les petites mains de monsieur, sans label, aucune référence, avec une distribution ultra limitée, sans promo rien. Un disque qui existe en tant que disque, replongeant l’exposé Dose One dans les affres du plus petit des groupes indépendants presque débutant. Un disque entièrement façonné par l’artiste, si l’on excepte la participation sur certaines pistes de Dan Boeckner, le zozo des groupes Handsome Furs et Wolf Parade…
Malgré l’absence d’une maison de disque, on peut dire que Dose One a clairement mit les petits plats dans les grands, mettant encore en avant son solide talent de designer pour nous filer une édition bien chiadée, bourrées de ces personnages récurrents à la tête rayée, et d’un disque noyé par de petites têtes de morts. Malheureusement pas de traces des textes abscons de Dose One, mais les curieux se consoleront avec la liste complète des instruments/machines utilisés dans l’album…
Des le lancement du disque, on peut clairement situer le “son” de ce dernier. Exit la folie de Subtle, le hiphop de Themselves ou Deep Puddle et la pop de 13+God. Ici, on va naviguer dans le son si caractéristique de son projet complètement barge qui avait propulsé Dose One, Why ? et Odd Nosdam sur le devant de la scène hip-hop expé internationale. Celui par qui “Anticon” a commencé à exister et à vivoter en Europe : le groupe cLOUDDEAD.
Les deux disques partagent le même grain de son “brumeux”, extrêmement vaporeux, plongeant dans la limite du réel et de l’imaginaire. Dans You Circa You on fait côtoyer beats tous pourris avec des milliers de synthés mis les uns sur les autres, sans pour autant donner un sentiment de son massif. Non tout est fait pour vous envelopper dans un brouillard ambiant, laissant à peine perler la voix de crécelle de l’americain. D’ailleurs, il chantonne, et s’éloigne, s’éloigne, s’éloigne. Jusqu’à se demander si le mec ne nous laisse pas en plan, se barrant après avoir seulement introduit son disque. Hey, je t’ai amené dans une purée de pois, je te lâche la main, t’es perdu et t’as l’air con. Mais le larron se plait à faire des surprises, et vous tapote l’épaule pour vous embarquer dans une ascension à vous dresser les poils du cul en moins de deux, avec cette percussion bien massive en métronome acharné. Dose One se lâche, rappe à toute vitesse, headbanging dans la brume.
Tout le disque va respecter le schéma indescriptible du premier disque de cLOUDDEAD. Pop song toute guillerette, Hip-hop acharné, digressions électroniques… Tout, absolument tout, est noyé dans ce brouillard sonore poisseux et vaporeux, donnant un aspect de “distance” et d’immensité du son assez impressionnante, mais pouvant rebuter ceux qui ne jurent que par des explosions qui grillent les enceintes et des beats qui claquent comme la mort. On va même se retrouver, en plein coeur du disque, au beau milieu d’une cour de récréation sans s’en rendre compte, avec des enfants piaillant au loin, noyés et désincarnés par ces fumées de claviers omniprésentes. La progression des sons utilisés est si diffuse, si naturelle, qu’elle nous enveloppe sans que nous nous rendions compte d’être prisonnier d’une lente et inexorable étreinte.
Cet album met la sensation de “demi-sommeil” en musique. Celle où vous vous laissez aller, avachi sur un canapé, à vagabonder mentalement, passant d’un sujet à un autre sans cohérence aucune, tout en ayant ce sentiment de fatigue qui pèse sur la caboche sans jamais s’amenuiser.
Certes, Death Death Death Death Death va sortir pas mal de gens de leur torpeur, avec ce piano frappé, et un refrain qui se perd dans les limbes insondables de plaintes hurlées à l’horizon, mais même ici, tout semble cotonneux, apaisant. On est complètement dérouté par la chape de plume pesant sur notre caboche, que l’on entend multiples bruits sans pourvoir les situer : Voitures qui passent, harmonica bien seul, petits cris… Le rêve éveillé dans toute sa splendeur.
Il y a bien la guitare acoustique de Wolf Parade sur The Line in The Cold qui va tenter de nous extirper dans un ensemble plus concret le temps de quelques minutes, pour un folk ténébreux, pour rapidement se faire avaler par une véritable couette sonore, toute molle, toute accueillante, emplissant la moindre parcelle de vos tympans. On vous susurre à l’oreille, on vous cajole, mais vous vous retrouvez bien seul à planer au dessus des nuages, à dériver sans but, oubliant que sous le lit de coton, l’enfer est près à vous cueillir tel un fruit mur.
Allez, on aura même notre vraie phase hiphop avec Hardest Thought, formé de couplets rugueux, avec un DoseOne débitant son texte sur des percus presque industrielles. Mais tout bascule forcément dans une ronde guillerette faite de clochettes et de refrains cajoleurs.
Et je ne parle pas de l’énorme Mom, qui va accoquiner rythme bien crade avec une montée cristalline et extatique, pour assurer le finish au vocoder ou de l’ineffable The Great Compromise long voyage de 8 minutes, indescriptible, fait de montées à vous arracher le coeur et de longues divagations synthétiques fragiles, complément embuées.
Cette dernière résume parfaitement ce disque : Un long voyage dans la brume la plus opaque, une plongé dans un Silent Hill sonore où chaque coin de rue laisse perler un son, un chant, une conversation, un bruit une envolée Hiphop ou une litanie pop. Impossible de les situer, comme il est impossible de se situer soi même si l’écoute est faite les yeux fermés. On est condamné à errer, les bras tendu, en esperant toucher un obstacle rassurant dans cette marche à l’aveugle.
Skeleton Repellent est au Hiphop ce que My bloody Valentine est au rock, ou Panda Bear au folk. Une longue plongée dans l’inconnu, dans un brouillard insondable, bourré de réverbérations, d’effets et d’expérimentations… Une descente en apnée dans le cerveau nébuleux d’un mec qui ne se plait qu’à s’extraire du monde réel par tous les moyens imaginables. Le disque se vit réellement comme un songe, comme un rêve à demi éveillé. La sensation de voir le paysage défiler alors que l’on a le nez collé contre la vitre du Tgv avec ce DoseOne dans les oreilles, et les paupières bien lourdes, est assez indescriptible…
En bref, Skeleton Repellent est le meilleur disque de cLOUDDEAD depuis… le premier disque de cLOUDDEAD… la comparaison est de toute façon obligatoire tant le mimétisme entre les deux disques, dans le fond comme dans la forme, est flagrante. Ce nouvel opus de Dose One va s’avérer donc rapidement indispensable pour les amateurs du groupe. Et ils auront raison, tant cette livraison frôle l’excellence dans son genre, et tant il est rare de tomber nez à nez avec un disque aussi opaque, enfumé, rêveur, mais aussi hermétique, voir presque autiste. Car en poussant la recette à l’extrême, certains argueront même que Dose One s’auto-parodie en usant de cordes si difficilement distinguables.
Mais cette galette semble si personnelle, dans son choix de distribution comme dans sa musique, que l’on a clairement plus l’impression que l’artiste s’est offert une bouffée d’air, un gros trip introspectif et mélancolique, comme il n’en avait pas fait depuis 10ans, et cela pile entre le joyeux et bordelique For Hero For Fool acclamés par la critique, et le prochain disque à sortir prochainement avec son groupe Subtle.
Le truc sympa, c’est que l’on peut même créer ce disque à la maison, histoire de vivre le truc à sa manière, ou de tester avant d’acheter :
Munissez vous d’un masque à gaz, puis allumez un feu dans votre pièce. Vous ne voyez plus rien ? Trop de fumée ? Votre main n’est même plus distinguable en la plaçant devant votre nez ? Parfait, maintenant lancez simultanément un disque de Public Enemy sur votre chaîne Hi-fi et une veille cassette de Donald Duck sur votre TV.
Ça y est, vous êtes l’heureux possesseur d’un Skeleton Repellent !!
