On ne présente plus les Boards Of Canada. Considérés comme l’une des formation les plus influente et importante de la musique électronique, les deux monsieur, dénichés par une des têtes d’ Autechre, ont emmaillé leur carrière avec des albums à chaque fois considérés comme des pierres angulaires de l’électronique rêveuse, belle et planante : Music As The Right To Children tout d’abord, traumatisant toute personne ayant essayé, en vain, de nous faire pleurer avec de poignantes nappes synthétiques. Placé, à tort ou à raison, dans les 25 meilleurs albums de musique « psychédélique », ce disque représentait à la perfection la flambée passée du label Warp. Puis Geoggadi, marathon expérimental, délaissant les litanies enfantines pour des théories mathématiques et équations mystérieuses. 22 titres, étouffants, sublimes, dérangeants, entre synthés dissonants et beats sourds. Bizarrement, coincé entre ces deux monolithes, est sorti un disque qui n’a pas eu l’exposition de ses deux compères, peut être à cause de son statut bâtard d’EP logé dans un « vrai » boîtier de disque, écrasé par les deux autres rouleaux compresseurs.
Et si In A beautiful place out in the country est un titre qui ne démord pas des ambiances évasives et cotonneuses du groupe, le propos du disque est tout autre. Coincé entre nouveau millénaire approchant et relents sectaires, le groupe égrène, d’une façon évidemment ironique, des références plus ou moins subtiles à la secte des Davidiens, qui organisèrent un suicide collectif massif au Texas au début des années 90 : Du titre prêchant l’échappé stellaire aux paroles du gourou leader passées au vocodeur sur le troisième titre, Boards Of Canada semblait enfin raccrocher, pour la première fois, leur musique sur quelque chose de concret.
Cette dernière ne serait donc pas directement née des étoiles, mais bien façonnée par deux mains humaines ? Petit retour sur la production du groupe dont on parle le moins.
On le dit à chaque sortie du groupe, mais Boards Of Canada fait du Boards of Canada. Toujours. Même en rajoutant des sonorités acoustiques dans leur dernier album, la recette ne change pas. Sûrement que le plat est trop bon pour être remplacé. Son goût est tellement unique que l’on ne peut s’en lasser. Ce n’est donc pas demain que l’on verra Boards Of Canada faire de l’Eurodance.
Donc voila, rien à dire de plus, In a Beautiful Place out in the Country, c’est du Boards Of Canada, point barre. Article intéressant.
Mais en laissant ses mains divaguer sur le clavier en écoutant le disque, impossible de ne pas se laisser submerger par des images niaises, des pensées profondes et sentiments personnels à l’écoute de cet EP : Kid for Today, c’est lent, vaporeux, claudiquant, avec ce métronome non identifiable, sorte de frottement sur des tuiles de bois, (chacun en fera son interprétation). Rien ne semble perturber ces synthés, tellement diffus qu’ils pourraient se substituer au bruit d’un vent chantant sa mélancolie, caressant le toit d’un chalet bien solitaire, en haut de sa montagne. C’est austère, beau comme la nuit, mystérieux, triste et chaleureux dans le même mouvement. Comme la dernière étreinte de l’être aimé, lors d’une chute inévitable dans un gouffre insondable.
Et si le précédent titre pouvait être une simple chute/mise en abîme, baladant nos souvenirs au grés du vent, Amo Bishop Roden ne laisse pas place à la rêverie. Enfin si, mais d’une façon tellement poignante, tellement forte, qu’elle se vit comme un coup de grâce, en perte de conscience instantanée, en choc brutal derrière la nuque. Ecouter Amo Bishop Roden c’est se faire arracher le coeur pour en extraire toutes les images les plus tristes et les plus belles de votre existence. C’est une thérapie gratuite, une mort avant la mort. C’est voir défiler les instantanés de sa vie, emmagasinés au plus profond de soi. Le genre d’images qui débarquent par vagues, vous plongeant dans un profond état de catalepsie pour quelques minutes. Ah oui le morceau, j’ai oublié d’en parler. Difficile de faire plus simple : C’est sublime. La mélodie, fragile, toute fluette, me viole le cortex. Les effets de nappes paraboliques, balayant l’espace le temps de maigres secondes, est hypnotique. Le rythme, pourtant extrêmement discret, réduit à son stricte minimum, vous perce le corps, se répercute dans vos artères, s’immisce dans le plus petit des recoins de vos tympans, avec cette lourde résonance. C’est hors du temps. Le genre de morceau que l’on pourrait passer en mode Repeat pendant une heure, tant l’impression de lassitude est inexistante, tant la progression de ce titre, pourtant linéaire, se prête au jeu du Fix musical, opium de l’évasion. Le morceau qui vous emporte quand vous êtes crevé, et qui vous crève quand vous tentez d’ouvrir vos ailes. Un paysage, un territoire imaginaire est créé, et seule une mauvaise santé du lecteur de disque pourrait nuire à ce voyage.
Saut de l’ange : sur la bonne centaine de compositions accouchées par Boards Of Canada, Amo Bishop Roden en est la plus belle. L’une des plus simple aussi. Mais le meilleur morceau du groupe, le plus touchant, le plus profond, c’est sans hésitation.
Difficile de s’extraire de ce titre donc. D’accepter le fait qu’il va falloir passer au prochain tableau. De se préparer au profond vertige créé par la reprise de conscience, par l’ouverture de paupières trop longtemps fermées. Elles qui étaient ouvertes sur un monde d’une beauté saisissante. Le plafond a souvent une sale gueule. Alors on va se chercher une A Beautiful Place Out In The Country. Tres « Music as the Right To children » que ce morceau : Synthés aériens/mortuaires, beats Hiphop autoritaires, rires d’enfants perlant tout au long de la composition. L’étonnement vient de ce texte débité au vocoder, comme sur une piste underground des frenchies de AIR. Texte servant de préchi-précha pour le gourou de la secte de Waco. A vrai dire, difficile d’en saisir la teneur, tant le tout est déformé, fondu dans les nappes de claviers cristallines, pétrifiantes de clarté. Et ces enfants, qui rient, qui se gaussent de l’atmosphère énigmatique du tout, pour entamer une dernière ronde qui va s’éteindre lentement, très lentement, jusqu’à rendre les digressions imperceptibles.
Zoetrope conclura le disque d’une façon encore plus saisissante, en jouant sur les échos et répercussions, faisant tournoyer dans nos oreilles des notes claires, rebondissant sur les murs d’une caverne de glace, distillant une mélopée timide, éphémère, hypnotique. On perd la notion du temps, on lache prise, se laissant emporter par ce psychotrope enfantin et presque abêtissant. Etrange et parfait mélange entre ésotérisme et hermétisme. Difficilement descriptible.
Pour les fans du groupe, ce petit disque est immanquable. Mais pour ceux qui ne connaissent que peu/pas Boards Of Canada, In a Beautiful Place Out in the Country est une excellente mise en bouche, de part sa qualité extrême tout d’abord, mais aussi par son prix plutôt faible (fait rare chez Warp), l’EP tournant, accompagné de son beau boitier, dans les 7 ou 8 euros neuf environ.
Il n’est évidemment pas la peine de reparler des titres précités comme dernière bonne raison de vous plonger dans ce disque, tant ces petits miracles parlent d’eux même… (Qui a dit « Amo Bishop Roden » ?) Oui, la musique du groupe est terne, lente et autiste au premier abord. Mais elle est au final si belle et profonde que perdre pied en compagnie des deux écossais est toujours accompagné d’une impressionnante fascination pour ces petites fresques vaporeuses… Sentiment qui n’a point fléchit depuis 10 ans maintenant.
Mais “In a Beautiful Place…” est surtout, sans conteste, le meilleurs des disques du groupe en format “court”, Twoism compris.
Reparcourir encore et encore cette sublime petite galette nous amène inévitablement à une question plus que logique : A quand un nouvel album de Boards Of Canada ?

Pour ma part, je ne connais que le morceau “A Beautiful Place Out In The Country” et je suis tout à fait d’accord avec ton avis. Je pense d’ailleurs que sans ses voix d’enfants, la musique perdrait tout son charme, puisqu’il n’y aurait pas cette touche mystérieuse et, paradoxalement, apaisante.
moi j’ai lu quelque part que le titre in a beautiful place out in the country était un hommage à une chanson de jacques Brel. Véridique. Sinon, excellent EP, mais il est évident pour tout fan des BOC, non?
Blooguear ==} Je trouve the Campfire vraiment excellent, meme s’il n’est pas aussi “marquant” que les autres disques du groupe. On va dire que Geogaddi et Music As The Right To… sont marquant sur leur ensemble, difficile par contre de tirer un morceau plus qu’un autre. Pour Campfire Headphase, c’est le contraire, certains morceaux sont affolants de beauté, mais on retiens plus ces derniers que l’album lui même…

Tain, je ne l’ai pas ce BoC, et sans cet article, je ne m’y serais certainement pas attardé avant un bon moment.
Rien que le passage sur “Amo Bishop Roden”, euh mais il me faut ça au plus vite quoi. T’as l’art de filer envie enfoiré.
Le pire c’est que ce titre n’a rien de special “techniquement”…
Mais je ne sais pas, il m’envoi hors de la stratosphere d’une façon assez hallucinante…
