Difficile de dresser un portrait du groupe Matmos. Musique électronique en constante mutation, toujours en recherche de nouvelles idées et formes d’expressions, les deux américains ont petit à petit été considérés comme les princes d’une musique concrète ouverte sur le monde et la musique dans toutes ses expressions. Grands potes de Bjork ou du Kronos Quartet, instigateurs des disques Soft Pink Truth, les Matmos ont surtout sorti une tripoté d’albums ayant chacun un thème central radical, désarçonnant à chaque fois les amateurs du groupe.
Apres une première étape très electronica, le groupe a secoué son monde en sortant A Chance to cure is a Chance to cut disque affolant (c’est par celui-ci que j’ai pu découvrir le duo d’ailleurs) ayant pour concept de mixer des samples, des bruits de corps et d’opérations chirurgicales avec de l’électro, sans jamais oublier la notion de mélodie (génial dernier morceau). Aussi fascinant que repoussant, le disque arrivait à nous faire danser sur une transplantation du foie en 5.1. Imaginez toutes les opérations de Nip/tuck remixées avec des beats techno et des digressions click n’ cuts. L’objet, sans équivalent, annonçait la couleur dès le packaging (au secours) et décortiquait tous les sons entendus dans le disque (une habitude pour le duo).
Dansez sur une liposuccion, remuez les fesses sur une chirurgie de l’oeil au laser, planez en pleins tests sur des rats ou payez vous un bad trip sur un ravalement de façade ! Passer A chance to cut is a chance to cure c’était l’assurance de passer une bonne soirée. Enfin, pour vous évidemment, à prendre des photos le sourire aux lèvres d’une audience décomposée dès explication du concept : “Hey mec, tu danses sur une rhynoplastie là hein !” Bref, le disque d’électronique le plus organique, au sens propre du terme, un trip total, jusqu’au-boutiste, encore incroyable aujourd’hui.
J’aimerai me fendre d’un article sur cet Ovni, mais je vais juste dire que ce disque est indispensable pour tout amateur de bizarrerie électronique. Il est fascinant, passionnant, drôle (la liposuccion qui se transforme en deep house “indienne”, avant de virer au Hip-Horgane), foisonnant, parfois sublime et toujours aussi énorme et jouissif. Un de mes disques de chevet.
Bon, on s’attendait à une spéciale Best-of accouplements de chevaux bondage sur fond de Trance pour le disque suivant, mais le groupe nous sort leur relecture du patrimoine musical américain avec The Civil War : De la guerre de sécession au vieux banjo country tout pourri, tout était malaxé dans un écrin electronica sublime, mais franchement déroutant, à se demander si le groupe ne se foutait pas de notre gueule sur certaines pistes…
Dernier essai officiel en date, The rose has teeth in the mouth of a beast se présentait comme un manifeste Gay du collage sonore, poussant la musique concrète à son paroxysme, en tentant de dresser le portrait de 10 personnes / artistes / écrivains and co, souvent homosexuels, toujours ayant le destin brisé. Morceau d’electro-machine à écrire-piano, ou Break-fanfare-salace, le disque s’affranchissait des essais concrets lourdingues pour donner ce qui fut la galette la plus accessible du duo. Même ma grand mère trouvait ça cool.
Autant vous dire qu’à l’annonce du nouvel album du duo, je piaffais d’impatience, même si je n’ai jamais pu retrouver la perfection du son Matmos depuis leur essai electro-chirurgical, ce qui commence à faire un bail mine de rien. Mais voila que s’ammène Supreme Balloons, annoncé comme très direct, très porté sur les synthés pourris, les Atari et le son 8 bits recréé à l’aide d’une armada de claviers Korg et Roland de première génération, mais surtout dénué de collages et autres expérimentations sonores. Une révolution dans le son de Matmos. Allaient ils tomber dans une musique commune, sympathiques mais sans trop de surprise ?
Evidemment, les mecs de Matmos ne pouvaient pas faire un simple disque de musique vintage, pour le plaisir simple de la régression. A l’instar du récent “Computer Games” de Kerri Chandler, le concept devait porter plus loin. Comme d’habitude avec les deux gars de San-Francisco, il faut prendre une matière première pour la détourner, la flinguer, a massacrer, la transporter sur des territoires insoupçonnés, que cela soit une réussite totale ou un essai completement foireux.
Pour tout vous dire, je n’ai pas trop pigé le truc à la première écoute. (Comme je n’avais pas pu piger le A chance to cut is a chance to cure trop aveuglé par les bruits d’intestins en pleins coïts sonores). On pense à un disque de 8bits électro bien marrant, assez barré. Petite erreur. En s’accaparant les morceaux, en tendant l’oreille, en s’occupant plus des structures et des architectures plutôt que des sons eux même, on pige vite le truc :
Matmos se sert de la musique 8 bits pour faire de la musique. Plutôt “refaire” la musique. Naviguer de genre en genre. Defrichons la chose.
Synthés tout pourraves, litanies rigolotes, bleeps nasillards, on est bien dans un semblant de Soundtrack de oldies. Rainbow Flag laisse une mélodie se dérouler, monter et descendre, faire la nique à vos tympans en faisant des petits loopings rigolos. Mais le rythme est étrangement cadencé. Il parle directement à vos hanches. Il vous donne envie de claquer des doigts. Il part dans un semblant de choeurs sous heliums, ou de trompettes lo-fi, au choix. Hou ! Mais derriere cette vieille console cassée perle un charme bien latin. La chaleur, le truc qui vous donne envie de bouger de droite à gauche en mettant ses lunettes de soleil. En schématisant méchamment, on dirait presque que Matmos invente là la Bossa-nova pour Geek. Le Daedelus plongé dans une salle d’arcade. Le stage de Blanka si ce dernier avait choisi se laisser caresser le chibre plutôt que de fermer les poings.
Changement radical d’ambiance avec Polychords, beaucoup moins tordu. Beat métronomique, super jouissif, House presque régressive. La ligne mélodique tranchera pourtant drôlement avec le coté rigolard du tout, puisque c’est un orgue qui va se greffer à cette cavalcade. Bref, contraste presque dérangeant entre cet orgue claudicquant qui se retrouve bardé de multiples couleurs avec ce pilonnage débile, rigolard, dansant en diable. Tu enterres ta mère, mais tu joues à Super Mario Bros en pleine église, pendant que les autres pleurent, et tu oses même balancer un Put your hands in the air ! pendant la veillée mortuaire.
On part dans l’expérimental le temps de l’introduction de Mister Mouth, avec des sons qui giclent dans tous les sens, crépitements et explosions pixélisées, sans structure, sans repères. Mais au moment où l’oreille décroche, trop submergé par cette attaque non ciblée, qu’une enormissime montée débarque et nous transporte dans un espèce de club-banger à tourner de l’oeil. Completement désaxé, déstructuré, le titre n’en garde pas moins une ossature dantesque, matraquée par des basses gigantesques et bien cradingues. Break, passage synthétique énigmatique, retour du rythme, orgasme pour dancefloors chiant la cocaïne par tous les pores de la peau. La montée finale est à se mouiller le froc tellement cette dernière arrive à point nommé, libératrice, à griller tous les pieds du monde.
Puis on revient sur le morceau. On le réécoute. Une référence nous saute à la gueule d’une façon presque naturelle. On se débarrasse, du son, on en prend que son ossature, sa saleté, sa construction : Moustache Half A scissor de Mr Oizo ! C’est du Mr Oizo joué à la Gameboy. Ni plus ni moins. Le même plaisir de se retrouver devant ce tsunami de digressions dégueulasses, de pieds pachydermiques noyés dans des éclairs noisy, dans des déchirures et changements de rythmes sadiques. Le pied total.
Encore un virage à 90° avec Exciter Lamp and the Variable Band qui va aussi s’ouvrir sur bonne minute expérimentale, presque abstraite, avec ces bleeps sautillants dans tous les coins et cette masse sourde à faire trembler les murs. En tendant l’oreille, on croit bien percevoir une mélodie toute mignonne et bien débile, mais cette dernière est tellement fracassée qu’on prend presque pitié pour elle. Erreur, tout se brise, et arrive sur une litanie super accélérée, très jolie, bien aérienne. Boum éclair de lucidité (ou abus de drogue à voir) on croirait entendre un concert de Steel Pans (vous savez les bidons en fer à la surface courbées, qui vont des sons tous jolis lorsqu’ils sont tapés avec des battons). Mais euh, des Steel Pans en mono sur un telephone portable évidemment. Nécrose du concert façon caraïbe, on nous balance dans un tourbillon de synthés pourraves, giclées rondes mais limites malsaines, genre Nintendo qui ouvre un manége partant en couille avec des clowns cannibales enculant les petit chevaux de bois. Les neurones semblent alors être une notion bien lointaine.
Et ce n’est pas Les folies Françaises qui nous rassureront sur la stabilité mental du duo, vu que ces derniers tentent de nous pondre un morceau de musique classique avec pour seules armes des vieux claviers Korg croulant sous le poids des années. De la musique Baroque reinterpretée en remplaçant le clavecin par des claviers vintages, on aura tout vu, et certains bien pensants crieront presque au scandale. (Le livret et Wikipedia me soufflent même que le morceau fût composé par un certain François Couperin en 1700 et des poussières). On aura même le droit à la petite incursion ambiant avec Cloudhoppers, tout fragile et éthérée.
Alors après les caraïbes, le classique ou l’électro cradingue, il restait quoi à défricher à coup de Gameboys et autres vieux Korg ? Le rock. Enfin non, plus drôle, le rock psyché. Celui qui s’étire à la Pink Floyd ou Aphrodites Child. Celui qui vous plonge la tête dans des volutes enfumées, dans une cave avec un brouillard à couper au couteau. Et pour le coup, Matmos ne va plus taper dans la vignette, vu que le morceau Supreme Balloon se déroule pendant 25 minutes. A dire vrai, encore une fois, si l’on survole le titre, en fond sonore, d’une oreille peu attentive, on n’y décèlera qu’une longue cavalcade old-school, une espèce d’épopée Chiptune qui tourne à n’en plus finir…
Pourtant, des les premières minutes tout devient clair. La mélopée, posée, enivrante, lente, s’enroule autour de votre cou. Epousant les volutes de fumée d’un opium trop pur, suivant les divagations mentales du hippy coincé au fond de la pièce. On se laisse aller, l’oeil torve, tentant de suivre les arabesques de ce synthé tout pourri prenant la place d’une guitare planante passée sur 10 pédales à effets. Un rythme sourd s’installe peu à peu, tonne dans notre caboche, sert de métronome aux courbes presque aléatoires du clavier, qui se mue peu à peu en vrai charmeur de serpent. Sauf que le serpent, ici c’est vous. On part dans les nuages en dodelinant de la tête, on se laisse aller à la béatitude la plus totale. Les notes se parent d’échos, et le pied tambourinant à l’horizon sert de repère presque salvateur, histoire de ne pas basculer en entier dans le coma, avec les dents du fond qui baignent dans les psychotropes.
L’atmosphère se fait de plus en plus diffuse, aérienne, délicate. Et l’on bascule peu à peu sur une mélodie tout droite tirée d’un vieux Aphex Twin. Là où les claviers tout fragiles étaient rois. Où chaque note ressemblait à du cristal. On se croirait dans les Selected Ambiant Works… puis le rythme sourd revient, la mélodie se fait presque émo, à chavirer de bonheur, à écraser le coeur. Les nappes se glissent sur le tout, s’enroulent et s’entortillent comme aux premiers jours, tout devient dense, intense, appuyé, et l’on replonge dans cette balade au dessus des nuages, à filer entre les oiseaux, à caresser les cumulonimbus d’un revers de la main, à serrer la pince du soleil. Tiens, les Matmos sont illustré d’une façon étrange dans une montgolfière sur la pochette. C’est peut être ça finalement. Un voyage en montgolfière, serein, jamais secoué, à glisser sur la stratosphère comme du coulis de fraise le ferait sur une glace vanille.
Dernier acte, le titre tourne petit à petit en berceuse branquignole, avec ce semblant de boite à musique qui va petit à petit se nécroser, se casser, se déconstruire progressivement, perdre le rythme, pour échouer sur une sorte de Dub lo-fi. Une basse Dub qui perle, se détache du reste, et un clavier qui ressemblerait à un accordéon coincé entre deux joypads. On entendra bien d’étranges râles organiques, comme si le rêve aux psychotropes tournait sobrement au cauchemar, sans jamais sombrer dans l’horreur. Les petites bêtes grognent au loin, mais l’atmosphère cotonneuse balaie tout sentiment d’appréhension.
Superbe épopée, sorte de tribute Atom Hearth Mother en mode 8 bits, voir un revival Kraftwerk pour taper dans quelque chose de plus electro, et qui doit s’écouter en mode “casque-yeux-fermés” ou ne doit pas.
Histoire de faire retomber le charme précédent, Matmos va même nous balancer un morceau sans titre sur la 8éme plage (après 10 minutes de silence débile et inutile) juste énorme, sorte de Techno minimale bien insidieuse, à retourner n’importe quel Dancefloor un peu camé. Ca transpire dur, et l’attaque de hand clap vers la fin finira de convaincre ceux du fond de lever les bras en l’air.
Ce disque de Matmos, sous cet écrin électro débile qui semble évident à une première écoute un peu distraite, est au final d’une richesse absolue. Pas dans les tessitures sonores évidemment, vu que tout sort de Korg croulants, Moog voyager et autres machines plus ludiques que musicales aujourd’hui. (Enfin selon la perception actuelle des choses). Il est évident que le disque irritera toute personne ayant pour horreur ce genre de sons vintages et autres bleeps vidéo-ludiques
On se retrouve devant un petit catalogue de musique, un panel de genre joué façon chiptune, de divagations latines à la musique classique en passant par le rock psyché ou l’électro salace, façon Matmos. Et là où le disque est présenté par son label comme étant un simple fun défouloir pour un duo qui se voyait de plus en plus bouffé par une étiquette “musique-concrète-boursouflée”, on retrouve sans conteste la ligne directrice de Matmos depuis leur debut :
Utiliser une base sonore pour construire une architecture s’éloignant completement de sa matière d’origine, qu’elle soit à base de compressions de viscères, de fanfares américaines ou de Gameboys cramées. Comme si vous vous décidiez à construire une cathédrale avec des planches de bois.
Supreme Balloon n’est pas un simple disque ludique surfant sur la vague chiptune, alignant des titres façon Crystal Castles dans le seul but de foutre le bordel, balancer des petits tubes bien jouissifs ou de se fendre la gueule. c’est une sorte de declaration d’amour à la musique, dans toutes ses formes, dans tous ses genres même quand elle se retrouve plongée dans un amas de sons cramés et regressifs.

Je teste en direct la musique que tu as mis en extrait. C’est kiffouillant! Je sais pas si j’écouterais ça en boucle, mais je suis curieux d’écouter l’album à l’occas… très curieux même.
Ouaip, c’est le bon terme “curieux” en fait… Matmos utilise la chiptune pour en faire quelque chose d’autre, ce qui donne des constructions de morceaux que l’on a pas l’habitude d’entendre dans le genre “8bits music”
Hesite pas à farfouiller à la Fnac ou autre, cela te plaira peut etre ! Le disque est facile à trouver en plus…

Wony & Neska =} Ben pour tout vous avouer, “A chance to cut is…” tiendra surement plus sur la longueur que ce “Supreme Balloon”…
Par contre faut faire gaffe il est assez difficile. Pas d’accés, mais “d’etre accepté”… Je veux dire, ou on adore, ou on deteste, le disque peu agir comme un repulsif, difficile de rester indifferent…
Je crois même que lors de la premiere ecoute de “a chance to..” j’avais abdiqué avant la fin, au milieu de la chanson sur les Rats-cobayes… J’avais laissé tombé en me disant “putain je peux pas, c’est n’importe quoi ce truc…”. Alors qu’au final le disque est tres electro, et si l’on explique pas le concept, il est pas sur qu’une personne ne decouvre le truc (meme s’il se posera des questions ^^ )
Mais j’etais trop focalisé sur les samples et les bruits chirurgicaux pour apprecier le disque comme il se doit d’etre. C’etait pas la bonne periode. Au final, quand on prend le recul, et que l’on voit comment Matmos ont utilisé cette base ubuesque pour en faire un disque electro qui défonce, on se dit que les mecs frolent le genie… les mecs utilisent une base hallucinée pour faire des morceaux electro “normaux”
C’est un peu pareil avec ce “supreme Balloon”… si l’on est trop focalisé sur la forme, on se dit “un disque 8bits/chiptune de plus…” alors qu’une nouvelle fois, Matmos utilise simplement quelque chose pour cibler un but final qui est tout autre…
Quoi qu’il en soit, les deux disques meritent vraiment un coup d’oreille, meme si il y a de grande chance de ne pas aimer du tout, trop irrité par les sons Vintage-nintendo de l’un, ou par les bruits peu ragoutants de l’autre… A voir comment on aborde les projets…

Ca c est une reponse. Pour ce qui est des sons 8-bits , pas de problemes, j aime ca. Pour l’autre, si je n aime pas ce n est pas grave. Je veux tenter le truc, ca doit etre interssant dans tout les cas. Je m’offrirais ces 2 disques bientot je pense, j ai vmt envi d essayer. Comme ShinobiOfGaming, je suis curieux

En effet très bon le “A Chance to Cut is A Chance to Cure”, il me fait personnelement à la fois beaucoup rire, mais musicalement je le trouve très réussi.
Mais l’album non-cité “Matmos” (pour faire original) datant de 97 aussi très bien (je conseille particulièrement la dernière, Schluss, qui agit comme une dose de morphine de 8 minutes, extraordinaire)
Et bizarrement, c’est un groupe qui fonctionne très très bien en concert, on pourrait s’attendre à de l’électro/intello/bidouilleurs-devant-leurs-ordi, mais ça a une vraie pèche ! (je les avais vu à l’occasion du précédent, The rose has teeth in the mouth of a beast)
Et si je n’ai pas encore celui-là, ça ne saurait tarder, ta chronique fait vraiment envie.

On m’a très récemment offert le “A Chance to cure is a Chance to cut”. Une chose à dire : c’est complètement psyché ! C’est de la pure électronica difficilement définissable, mais incroyablement bonne. Ca manque un peu de “punch” parfois à mon gout, mais le tout est une petite bombe chirurgicale.

Comme Wony, le “A Chance to cure is a Chance to cut” me tente presque plus que le Supreme Balloon, mais semble différent. En tout cas j’ai bien envie de voir ce que peux donner de l’électro-barré-gore-chirurgical : une nouvelle manière d’appréhender la vie peut être ?
Wony & Neska =} Ben pour tout vous avouer, “A chance to cut is…” tiendra surement plus sur la longueur que ce “Supreme Balloon”…
Par contre faut faire gaffe il est assez difficile. Pas d’accés, mais “d’etre accepté”… Je veux dire, ou on adore, ou on deteste, le disque peu agir comme un repulsif, difficile de rester indifferent…
Je crois même que lors de la premiere ecoute de “a chance to..” j’avais abdiqué avant la fin, au milieu de la chanson sur les Rats-cobayes… J’avais laissé tombé en me disant “putain je peux pas, c’est n’importe quoi ce truc…”. Alors qu’au final le disque est tres electro, et si l’on explique pas le concept, il est pas sur qu’une personne ne decouvre le truc (meme s’il se posera des questions ^^ )
Mais j’etais trop focalisé sur les samples et les bruits chirurgicaux pour apprecier le disque comme il se doit d’etre. C’etait pas la bonne periode. Au final, quand on prend le recul, et que l’on voit comment Matmos ont utilisé cette base ubuesque pour en faire un disque electro qui défonce, on se dit que les mecs frolent le genie… les mecs utilisent une base hallucinée pour faire des morceaux electro “normaux”
C’est un peu pareil avec ce “supreme Balloon”… si l’on est trop focalisé sur la forme, on se dit “un disque 8bits/chiptune de plus…” alors qu’une nouvelle fois, Matmos utilise simplement quelque chose pour cibler un but final qui est tout autre…
Quoi qu’il en soit, les deux disques meritent vraiment un coup d’oreille, meme si il y a de grande chance de ne pas aimer du tout, trop irrité par les sons Vintage-nintendo de l’un, ou par les bruits peu ragoutants de l’autre… A voir comment on aborde les projets…

Et surtout, du MATMOS, avec un peu de chance, ben il y en a dans tous les magasins de disques sympas….

En effet très bon le “A Chance to Cut is A Chance to Cure”, il me fait personnelement à la fois beaucoup rire, mais musicalement je le trouve très réussi.
Mais l’album non-cité “Matmos” (pour faire original) datant de 97 aussi très bien (je conseille particulièrement la dernière, Schluss, qui agit comme une dose de morphine de 8 minutes, extraordinaire)
Et bizarrement, c’est un groupe qui fonctionne très très bien en concert, on pourrait s’attendre à de l’électro/intello/bidouilleurs-devant-leurs-ordi, mais ça a une vraie pèche ! (je les avais vu à l’occasion du précédent, The rose has teeth in the mouth of a beast)
Et si je n’ai pas encore celui-là, ça ne saurait tarder, ta chronique fait vraiment envie.

On m’a très récemment offert le “A Chance to cure is a Chance to cut”. Une chose à dire : c’est complètement psyché ! C’est de la pure électronica difficilement définissable, mais incroyablement bonne. Ca manque un peu de “punch” parfois à mon gout, mais le tout est une petite bombe chirurgicale.
