Difficile d’éviter l’introduction un peu factuelle en parlant de ce Moderat, où l’association de deux pointures de l’électronique Allemande : Apparat et Modeselektor. Le premier ayant, après de petits bijoux electronica, accouché d’un dernier album frisant la perfection, se révélant dans des constructions plus pop, et avançant des compositions à griller toute colonne vertébrale un peu sensible au genre. Les deux zozos du groupe Modeselektor avaient eux aussi, la même année, balancé un énorme disque (je me demande encore pourquoi je ne l’ai pas inséré dans mon top 2007 ) faisant le grand écart entre bombes imparables (The Darkside Of The Sun, 200007, Déboutonner, Hyper Hyper…) et morceaux à filer la chair de poule (Edgar, The White Flash, le sublime Let Your Love Grow…), pour un album partant dans tous les sens sans (presque) jamais gaver.
Ce disque de Moderat a su se faire attendre. Annoncé, abandonné, puis réactivé, l’album est tombé sous le coup d’un leak incomplet et crado trois mois avant sa sortie, cette dernière se retrouvant d’ailleurs repoussée semaine après semaines (prévu en Avril, pour finir par sortir mi-mai), avant de se voir parée d’un Dvd, d’un tracklisting remanié et de 4 titres supplémentaires.
PS d’introduction : Ah Au fait, je profite de l’artice pour glisser une news qui fait plaisir : un nouvel album de Clark, Totems Flare a été annonçé pour le 13 Juillet, apres son excellent Growls Garden . La pochette et tout le Tracklisting + info sur le site du label. Hop.
Ce qui est sur, c’est que le projet a été bossé à fond, visuellement comme musicalement. Le Digipack est nickel, entre carton et encre en relief, mâtiné d’un mince livret présentant un tracklisting et des images du Dvd. L’artwork est reconnaissable entre mille, et est déjà décliné en tee-shirt. Rien n’a été laissé au hasard, la version Deluxe porte bien son nom, on pardonne les retards.
Ce qui était prévu initialement, c’est que le projet cristallise les forces des deux entités. La puissance mélodique de l’un, avec les rouleaux compresseurs imparables de l’autre. L’ouverture, A New Error convaincra du bien fondé de l’entreprise. Techno rampante, au rythme bizarrement compressé mais hypnotique, surplombé dune petite litanie fragile. L’intérêt, cette ampleur que semble prendre graduellement le tout, passant de l’électro claudicante au tube empereur et implacable : La mélodie se déplie à n’en plus finir, les beats tapent en mode marche militaire, oscillant constamment entre fresque éthérée et pilonnage cradingue. Le bug sonore du dernier tiers, débouchant sur une hausse sonore surprise finira d’entériner le tout : Rien de spécial, certes, mais drôlement joli et plaisant.
Sea Monkey reprendra ce schéma de la piste qui commence dans le caniveau, pour finir en frôlant les nuages. Sauf que Moderat envoie clairement du bois sur cette piste, avec un kick assez monstrueux, caverneux en diable, mi-organique mi bionique. Ça tabasse dur, c’est super sombre, mais ça laisse assez d’air pour que des lignes de synthés à crever se greffent en mille-feuilles, histoire de continuer de nous taper sur la gueule, mais avec grâce. Quand la piste s’éteint, souffle, c’est pour mieux nous envoyer ad pâtre la minute d’après, n’hésitant pas à nous lâcher un tapis de bombe sur le crane. Les murs tremblent ? c’est normal.
Un peu plus loin Les Grandes Marches finiront de représenter le coté Techno du disque, en démarrant sur une guitare divine, rapidement secondé d’un clavier un peu Trance. Ok. C’est beau. Mais quand le rythme démarre, ça devient cosmique. Pour l’anecdote, je n’ai pas pu m’empêcher de lâcher un “Oh putain” dans le métro, à ce moment précis. Le reste du titre, assez court, et bénéficiant de l’explosion du premier tiers, se déroulera tranquillement, avec en fond ces guitares shoegazes cristallines écharpées par un kick bien sourd. (Dire que le morceau n’était pas prévu dans la première version du disque)
N°22 finira le boulot en proposant un long Dub/techno synthétique bien foutu et hypnotique, avec un travail de folie sur les synthés, des voix bizarres qui se dissipent dans l’espace, et une attaque finale qui plaira aux amateurs de Scuba.
Mais Apparat et Modeselektor devaient évidemment accoucher de morceaux plus pop. Bonne nouvelle, c’est Apparat, toujours aussi céleste derrière un micro (On remerciera encore Ellen Allien d’avoir eu l’idée de le pousser à faire cela), qui se colle à la partie vocale sur deux titres (enfin trois, mais il y en a un où c’est moins évident).
Rusty Nails tout d’abord. Premier titre tournant sur le web, et surtout plus belle pièce de l’album. Un vrai diamant. Rythmique chaloupée, profonde, mystique. Nappes de synthés divines, à crever. Et ce chant, bizarrement verrouillé par des machines, parfaitement placé. Le tout charme, hypnotise, renverse. Je ne sais pas vraiment décrire ça. Quand Sascha Ring se tait, et laisse les synthés cathédrales s’envoler, défoncés par une rythmique massive, c’est à filer le vertige. Des comètes te foncent en plein dans les trippes, tu te noie dans l’espace. Le chant reprend, le soulèvement se tait, mais on est déjà perdu, déjà étouffé, déjà largué, déjà mort. Le genre de morceau électro pop ultime comme on n’en façonne quasiment jamais, à ranger aux cotés du “The Test” des Chemical Brothers ou du “Even Spring” de Plaid. Rien que ça. Il faut l’entendre pour le croire, le casque vissé sur les oreilles, les images, les souvenirs, les émotions submergeant le cerveau, jusqu’à l’asphyxie.
L’autre leçon, c’est Out Of Sight en fin d’album. Comme celui du dessus, on a l’impression que les trois allemands ont pas mal écouté Burial avant de composer le morceau, le rapprochement pouvant aisément être fait dans les beats, profonds et sourds, pattern se dépliant ad nauseam tout en se logeant immédiatement dans notre cortex. Dans le traitement des claviers aussi, rugueux mais absolus, planants mais palpables. Dans le traitement de la voix enfin. Le morceau dans son ensemble pouvant immanquablement pensé au sublime Wayfering Stranger du précité Burial. Apparat susurre au milieux de synthés qui s’enroulent, vrillent, grondent. 6 minutes en totale apesanteur, à dompter les échos insondables et les textures affolantes. Va falloir que Sascha Ring pense à composer un album peuplé de ses incursions vocales, tant ces dernières ont débouché sur des petits chef d’oeuvres.
Les autres feats vocaux cultiveront une veine plus hiphop. On passera malheureusement sur le morceau Slow Match avec Paul St Hilaire, qui se fait dégommé par le souvenir de sa dernière incursion sur une prod Moderat, dans le précédant Modeselektor. Les textures sont encore à tomber (la première montée file la frousse) mais il manque un truc pour que la sauce prenne réellement. On lui preferera Sick With It, qui fera surement grincer des dents en balançant un Dancehall Technoïde hosté par Eased (inconnu au bataillon pour ma part) qui part dans des refrains épiques à grand coups de synthés, et un break lunaire + conclusion qui me rappelle les grands moments de Groove Armada sur leur “Goodbye Country“.
L’affolant BeatWaySick, seulement présent dans l’édition Deluxe de l’album, finira de fracasser les mâchoires avec un beat pachydermique complètement alien, permettant à Busdriver d’aligner son Flow Tgv comme un damné. Le refrain cartonne façon salve épileptique de fusil à pompe, à bout portant et en plein milieu du bide. Grosse grosse mandale, un des meilleurs morceaux du disque. Les voisins sonnent à ta porte, c’est normal.
L’album s’attaque enfin à une électronique céleste, planante, et belle comme le jour, avec notamment des morceaux “couple”, à l’instar des Fractales de l’album Walls.
3 Minutes Of / Nasty Silence débutera de la plus belle des manière, avec une première moitié simplement habitée de synthés à tomber, mélodie tire-larmes en slow motion, désert cristallin qui se déplie vers l’infini et sature graduellement. Vlan, grand coup de godasse, on vire tout pour échouer sur un tapis de beats déstructurés, giclant dans tous les sens, bourrés de bugs et de parasites. On ne s’en est pas rendu compte, mais on est déjà sur le deuxième morceau, qui réinvite les nappes de l’introduction, histoire de les faire copuler sur ce lit convulsé, et de nous bruler le coeur dans le même mouvement, avant que le morceau agonise dans des réverbérations cradingues.
Porc #1 / Porc #2 proposera le même type de voyage onirique, en commençant d’une façon plus directe, avec guitare appuyée et beats sourds. Encore une fois le titre prend rapidement une envergure saisissante, cavalcade gagnant implacablement en puissance. Mais la deuxième partie va calmer le jeu et partir vers les cieux, la gratte se retrouve en fond, alignant une ligne de basse sur des nappes angéliques, et un Apparat qui se remet à chanter, sa voix perlant à l’horizon, habillant discrètement un final homérique, avant de finir sur une étrange conclusion aux sonorités acid. Les nuages rentrent dans ton appart par la fenêtre, c’est normal.
Le Dvd n’est pas, bonne nouvelle, qu’un simple supplément. N’attendez pas de pseudo fonds d’écran en mode kaléidoscope, le travail de Pfafinderei est superbe, les artistes se focalisant sur la matière et le mouvement, pour accoucher de fresques habillant parfaitement les sons de Moderat. (Les Clip de Rusty Nails ou de BeatsWaySick sont admirables) De plus le Dvd se paie des interludes habillés par quelques courts titres non présents dans le disque (si l’on excepte Berlin ). Un vrai plaisir, bien plus qu’un bonus, à voir sur un bon écran, d’autant plus que les films uploadés sont systématiquement retirés de Youtube pour le moment. (Etonnant d’ailleurs qu’il n’y ait pas au moins un clip utilisé pour la promo, vu la reussite de ces derniers)
Au final, Apparat et Moderat ont servi l’album que l’on attendait (Justement, seul vrai problème du disque ?? ), parfait équilibre entre roulements électro puissants et mélodies divines. Difficile de dire si l’album résistera, sur de longs mois, aux écoutes intensives (voir compulsives dans le cas de Rusty Nails), les titres favoris s’identifiant dès la première écoute, pour un tout qui se révèle directement évident. Mais impossible de bouder son plaisir devant un album pareil, chiadé à l’extrême, générateur d’émotions bien présentes, et balayant un spectre musical assez varié.
Sans surprise, on espérait un très bon album, et l’on a un très bon album. Une des sorties indéniable de ce printemps.

Je profite pour annoncer la sortie de l’album de nathan fake hard islands(album 6 titres je crois)vachement bon(j’espère pas qu’il fait comme clark pour nous sortir un album long format juste après)

Ce que j’aime dans cet album, c’est que l’on baigne dans deux univers différents qui se rejoignent quand même.
Pour l’édition deluxe, j’ai un peu les boules aussi mais il faut savoir que c’était très limité. Résultat certains points de vente (comme la fnac de chez moi) ne recevaient pas ces fameuses éditions. L’autre bon plan était aussi d’acheter la version Deluxe sur Itune.
EN tout cas, A new error fait bien mal au cul. Et visiblement il y aurait un EP de prévu… A suivre!
Chié le nouveau Schuller est sorti? merde, je vais galerer pour l’avoir celui là u_u il est bon? j’avais tellement aimé le premier, que j’ai peur d’être déçu…

Je l’ai acheté hier, avec quelques écoutes sur Spotify avant. Je manque là aussi d’écoutes attentives, mais malheureusement, vraiment rien de marquant par rapport à Happiness. En tout cas, aucune gifle dans la gueule comme celle que je m’étais prise avec Weeping Willow ou Tears Coming Home..
Je vais me le remettre là, il faut que je l’écoute vraiment mieux. Et ne passe pas à côté, ça reste quand même Schuller.. Je te filerais plus d’impression plus tard si ça t’intéresse.
Et dans le pire des cas, tu peux déjà y jeter une oreille sur Spotify 😮
