Great Day Today
J’en devenais presque de mauvaise humeur. Apres deux ans de silence (et un matos entièrement volé je crois bien) Depth Affect avait lancé un énorme morceau avec Riddlore? en featuring. Rien d’autre. Une video, il y a quelques mois, sans infos, sans précision quand à un futur album ou Ep, fortement attendu pour ma part depuis la grosse claque prise par le très bon Hero Crisis. Ce clip, c’était beau comme du Hero Crisis, mais en plus cool, en plus décontracté, surement grâce au flow lymphatique de l’americain, mais aussi par une précision et un sens mélodique qui semble s’accroitre de galettes en galettes pour l’abstract-hiphop-boys-band-breton. Alors on est drôlement content, on arpente le web, on se dit que yeah, Depth Affect va sortir un nouvel album, avant de se pendre vu le peux d’infos distillées. Et voilà que ce Chorea déboule sans prévenir, Ep aussi rempli qu’un Patrick en fin de soirée.
Dammerung semble avoir reprendre les choses là où Hero Crisis les avait laissé. Pourtant, il ne va pas me falloir trop de temps avant d’être renversé par cette première compo. Voix cutée un peu putes, synthés bien gras et ligne de gratte acoustique, on est en erre connue. Mais la chanteuse en mode vocoder détraqué file une aura incroyable au tout, et l’on se fait percuter méchamment par les handclaps parfaits. C’est triste, beau, mélancolique, joyeux, super émo (pas les mèches violettes, celui qui te prend le cœur), ça te drague la nuque, et en écoutant ça, tu te mets à faire des petits bonds sur ta chaise de bureau comme une bagnole de Snoop Dogg. Le break d’avant montée finale est encore plus tire-larmes qu’un morceau de Ventura, la voix revient te faire des suçons dans l’encolure, tu as des fourmis dans le plexus et les mains rouges à force de claquer des moignons. Morceau génial, super abouti, fragile et jouissif, du Depth Affect de haut niveau, merci pour la baffe d’entrée.
Dans le genre “Depth Affect maîtrise les yeux fermés”, je dois dire que leurs morceaux avec Mc en featuring sont à 100% dantesques. Celui avec Alias sur le premier disque était culte. Sur Hero Crisis, Subtitle démontait comme rarement, et Awol One était emporté dans une superbe comptine mélo. Sur ce Else’s Vision, Riddlore? est ridiculement à son aise, sur une instrue de folie, avec ces petits synthés facétieux qui s’immiscent partout, cette mélodie à chialer (en plus de ses beats parfaitement placés). Sérieusement, le dernier tiers est tout simplement imparable. Rupture amoureuse et bande de potes, autour d’un feu de bois dans un nightclub.
Stunt & Sms passera sur un abstract épique en diable, imparable, balançant la recette d’Hero Crisis dans quelque chose de plus frontal, imparable, c’est ghetto ploubenec, même le break émo est un peu plus charcuté que prévu. Rien de spécial, on se prend juste la compo dans la gueule. En écoutant ça, difficile de savoir si l’on sautera encore autant contre ses murs dans 3 mois, mais là, c’est plus bien foutu.
Depth Affect, c’est aussi un petit coté pop assumé, que l’on entendait déjà perler sur certains titres (voir atteignant une certaine perfection Hip-pop avec Dusty Records feat Awol One). C’est donc pas nouveau, entre la petite guitare acoustique qui tourne et qui chiale, et le chant qui balance un petit couplet (Honey Folky superbe…) avant de se retirer sous l’avalanche de beats et synthés séquencés sur la Mpc. Alors sur Chorea, on a Marine Eyelid, qui pousse le vice beaucoup plus loin. Vraie chanson cette fois, avec chant un peu plus affirmé et mélodie évidente. Et pourtant, ça ramone dur, entre rythme imparable, et lignes de claviers bien appuyées. On se paie en plus une wobble bass pas piquée des hannetons, qui grince dur derrière la gratte folk. Devendra Banhart se fait racler la gueule sur le bitume de l’autoroute A84, et en plus il aime ça. La fin est toute belle, tu claques dans tes mains en voyant les boites à rythmes pleurer devant un soleil couchant. Des romantiques ces Akai.
Et pour pousser l’exercice de la chansonnette candide dérouillée par un brise-glace, le groupe inclus un remix d’un morceau de Populous With Short Stories. Pour le coup, avec Man Overboard, on a une vraie composition pop, mais Depth Affect aime brouiller les pistes, et balance une introduction façon Gameboy maelstorm, avant de laisser le champ à la voix haut perchée. Le morceau se déroulera tranquillement, si l‘on excepte deux belles montées électroniques à raidir l’échine. On sent le groupe un peu moins libre sur ce morceau, vu son statut de remix/relecture, à la durée un peu trop radine aussi. On lui préfèrera donc son pote du dessus Marine Eyelid, mais ce morceau passe drôlement bien quand même.
L’Ep se finira sur une longue montée mystérieuse, dénuée de beats mais pas de textures mille-feuilles et petites mélodies en clochette. Amenecer est donc carrément plus sympa que leurs delires noisy interludiques & conclusifs pas foncièrement dingues. Non là c’est de la montée électronique de ninja, si tu ne fais pas gaffe tu te retrouves avec les viscères dévalant le calebard. C’est beau, ça envole ton âme sans problème. Mais c’est aussi, encore une fois, un peu trop succinct et frustrant, on aurait aimé voir le tout s’étirer une minute de plus… Histoire que Depth Affect nous plonge vraiment la gueule dans les étoiles, et ne pas se contenter de nous les placer à porté de main.
Un EP pour étaler ses talents avec brio. Depth Affect rassure, et montre que ses membres savent toujours autant se débrouiller dans le Hiphop-electro pur et dur, l’abstract folkysant, ou le banger visant la nuque sans tortiller du cul. Les synthés sont toujours à se damner, les mélodies aussi, les handclaps résonnent tellement qu’ils rebondissent sur toutes les parois de la caboche. Merde, l’introduction du premier morceau est folle, avec cette voix qui part en vrille, supplantée par cette guitare branquignole à tomber. Le pied. Et franchement, le morceau avec Riddlore est une bombe. Une vraie correction, un passage à tabac émo, une caresse avec poing américain, le couteau tente de s’infiltrer sous tes omoplates, mais on t’as fait la bise juste avant donc ça va c’est cool. Un 3éme album est attendu la bave aux lèvres.
Car en s’axant sur des compos toujours aussi nerveuses et mais surtout pétries de mélodies et d’émotions, le groupe breton n’a jamais aussi bien porté son nom.

Aucun autre groupe electro-hiphop n’arrive à me faire autant décoller et planer.
Par contre l’écoute est bloquée du taf, chez moi pas envie de l’écouter avec mes écouteurs et du bruit tout autour, du coup je suis hyper frustré de savoir que les sons sont là mais que je ne peux en profiter, en tout cas pleinement.
