Mount Kimbie avait clairement ravagé mon petit coeur l’année dernière en sortant deux Ep contenant ce qu’il y avait de mieux en 2009. Electronica-2step-abstract-folk-UkGarage-experimentalo-enfumé et plus encore, il était difficile de catégoriser les petites perles des deux anglais, qui ne révolutionnaient rien, mais qui faisaient leur tambouille foutrement bien. Ces rythmes, incroyablement bien taillés, d’une classe extreme, me faisaient presque croire que Mount Kimbie composait simplement la musique que je rêvais d’entendre depuis des lustres. Bref, mes chouchous de l’année 2009, avec un album que j’attendais la bave aux lèvres, un long format enfin, une longue fresque Mount Kimbienne me rassasiant pour deux ans grâce à de futurs classiques Abstract 2step qui renverraient Flying Lotus dans-son-studio-en-pleurant-(ah !)-pour-enfin-composer-un-album-que-j’aimerai-au-moins-un-peu-parceque-là-franchement-j’ai-honte-mais-je-n’accroche-pas-sur-son-second-opus-non-plus-même-si-Zodiac-Shit-est-un-morceau-extraordinaire…
Pan, Crooks & Lovers, qui déboule avec sa pochette tellement crunk que même Lil Jon a pensé que le tout dépassait les bornes. Merci Hotflush Recordings donc, sortir un Lp de Mount Kimbie, c’est la bonne action de l’année. Juste la prochaine fois, n’oubliez pas de mettre l’autre moitié du disque.
Alors certes, la cover bien frontale du Lp choque par son mauvais goût au premier abord, mais en ouvrant le très beau packaging cartonné, le tout prend un sens. Il n’y ici que photos cornées et mélancoliques d’instantanés pris dans les rues anglaises. C’est joli, sincèrement, et l’on voit l’artwork principal d’un autre oeil après ça.
Tout adorateur du groupe que je suis, j’ai quand même fais un peu la gueule en faisant claquer la galette dans mon discman. La durée : 35 minutes. Le premier morceau, intro qui n’a rien de spécial. Le deuxieme, Would Know, est assez sympa (avec ses bruits de foule et son facetieux synthé final) mais loin des missives envoyées sur les Ep. Bref, la mine renfrogné, je me dis que c’est mal barré, que je viens deja de passer sous la barre des 30 minutes restantes, que je vais etre déçu la larme à l’oeil, que Hotflush c’est des méchants, que je vais devoir trouver une autre raison de vivre, tout ça.
Before I Move Off déboule, avec ses cordes bizarres. Je suis toujours pessimiste. Un rythme arrive. Enfin. Un truc qui esquinte, qui parle directement à la nuque, qui fait claquer tes doigts. Ca te fait frisotter les cervicales, fourmis dans les hanches. Parfait. Ce rythme est parfait, c’est du Mount Kimbie, ce que j’attendais. Alors on se laisse aller. Boum clap boum clap boum clap. La guitare acoustique prend de l’importance, croisant le bleep 8bits. C’est imparable, c’est bien sympa. Ca file le sourire. Tout s’arrête, on est surpris, et là, Mount Kimbie mute, lâche sa forme ultime, absolue, sublime. Des voix putes, charcutées, lachent des syllabes ici et là. Le rythme est tellement mortel, la mélodie aussi, c’est super simple, mais au final juste t parfait. Tu écoutes ça dans la rue, c’est IMPOSSIBLE de ne pas sourire, de ne pas faire “snap” doigts, de ne pas avoir envie de tourner sur toi-même une rose entre les dents. C’est simple, à la 2min18 du morceau, je me suis écrié mentalement “putain c’est l’album de l’année”. Alors quand même pas hein, c’était l’émotion. Mais bordel, ce gap, ce petit vide qui débouche sur une deuxième partie de morceau absolument mortelle, est incroyable. Cette 2min18, ce fut un petit rush d’adrénaline, une libération, un soulagement en me disant que oui, ce Crooks & Lovers allait etre cool, malgré un départ poussif. J’en fais trop? Bien entendu.
Et après nous avoir montré que Mount Kimbie maîtrisait toujours aussi bien sa recette, le groupe va nous étonner avec Blind Night Errand. Sur la piste précédante, on marchait dans la rue avec le soleil dans la gueule, en tenant ses ray-ban et son sandwich thon-mayo, mais ici, c’est les caves, le dancefloor, la saleté, Londres un vendredi soir bourré. Le rythme est plus electro, plus enlevé, grosse ligne de basse imparable, stroboscopes, minijupes et machine à fumée. Evidemment les samples de voix surviennent vite, ça soupire, ça murmure, petits orgasmes éparses noyés dans cette charge caverneuse, tu sentirais presque la chair et le gloss sur tes levres, télescopages de corps sous averse de drogue. Dernier tiers, on opère un virage à 180° avec un shamisen qui remplace le simulateur de vitalic, pour repartir dans un abstract plus lié au groupe. Adriatic, interlude abstracto-folk, permettra de faire tranquillement redescendre la pression, avant l’autre énorme claque du disque, Carbonated. Parce que là aussi, comme Before I Move Off, c’est une vraie raclée que nous administre les deux anglais. Le morceau démarre sur une techno cristalline, superbe, tout en relief. Parasites, nuage sonore, c’est un peu de la detroit-shoegaze, avec cette facette frontale qui va se faire remplacer par quelque chose de plus laidback. Le timing est assuré à la perfection, tout intervient pile au bon moment. Et quand on se dit que des petites voix sur le tout formerait un ensemble parfait, les anglais ne se privent pas, et balancent de nouveaux de petites exclamations pas piquées des hannetons. Ecrase moi le coeur avec tes talons, j’en redemande. Comme pour les EP, il n’y a rien de spécial sur ce morceau. Pourtant il est parfait. tout simplement. Tout intervient à la perfection, avec une pertinence rare, c’est construit à la serpe, superbement effectué. Le morceau, sur un fade-in à te griller la colonne vertébrale, repart dans ses apparats techno du départ, on n’en s’en rend même pas compte. On vient de se prendre une vague de bonheur, de maitrise, de classe en pleine gueule. Magistral.
Alors Mount Kimbie va revenir sur des terrains moins défrichés, plus en raccord avec ce que l’on entendait sur les EP de 2009, de l’abstract brumeux à la William, sur le bien mystérieux et hypnotique Ruby, bourré de revers, bruits filtrés et field recording chelou, avec un rythme beaucoup moins enlevé que les pistes précédentes, avant une fin ciblant encore directement la nuque. On s’amusera beaucoup moins sur Ode To Bear, assez laborieux et franchement pas folichon dans ses sonorités. Et pourtant, une superbe mélodie et un beat terrible déboule, on se dit que le morceau commence enfin, on se prépare à remettre ses ray-ban, ben non, c’était juste pour les 20 dernières secondes. Frustrant.
Heuresement, Field déboule. Le banger du Lp, le fusil à pompe dans le thorax de Crooks & Lovers. Et pourtant ce Field, qui avait filtré quelques mois avant la sortie du Lp, m’avait clairement laissé de marbre. Parodie du sublime Maybes, en reprenant les mêmes codes, structures et idées. Bref, il y avait de quoi etre bougon. Et pourtant, callé au milieu du disque, ce morceau devient énorme. Comme son grand frère, il a donc deux parties disctinctes. On démarre ici avec un tunnel de synthés façon gros drogués, Mount Kimbie dans la rave, bloqué sur un acid, à taper sur la porte des latrines de festival en bavant. Hypnotique, jouissif, le coeur se met à sursauter à l’orée de cette guitare acoustique candide qui se fait attendre petit à petit, nous assurant que l’explosion sera belle. Arret brutal, une demi seconde de silence, et l’on part dans un folk 2-step vraiment beau, encore une fois vraiment parfait niveau construction et timing. On est passé du champ tekos ravagé à la balade champêtre en compagnie de sa belle. Le morceau avait clairement le potentiel de muer en fresque, de s’étendre sur plus de 7 minutes, on sent que Mount Kimbie aurait pu étirer ces deux parties, les faire copuler sur la longueur. On se contentera d’une vignette drôlement réussie. Mayor renverra lui à Sketch On Glasses, aka un abstrackt plus technoïd, remuant, saccadé, et imparable. On croit entendre claquettes et balles de ping pong, le synthé est mortel, les petites demoiselles qui laissent échapper des “ouh yeah, love you the thing is ouh yeah ouh yeah” et cela se transforme en vrai tube à partir d’1 minute 30. Le morceau change de structure toutes les 30 secondes, les idées fusent de partout, rien de spécial dans l’ensemble, mais c’est génialement mis en forme.
Malgré tout l’enthousiasme survenant à l’écoute, on ne peut qu’être frustré, voir déçu par ce Crooks & Lovers. Une sympathie énorme émane de ce disque. Une émotion aussi, une mélancolique, un certain je m’en-foutiste qui touche, franchement. Dès que l’on écoute la galette, c’est bonheur, sourire et pulsations. Mais dès le casque posé sur les genoux, on fait la gueule. Trop court, pas vraiment fini, ce Lp offrant quasimment moins que les deux Ep précédants. Il est incomplet, Il a quelques pistes sans grand intérêt (Ode To Bear, et surtout le trio intro/interlude/outro, qui auraient pu, en les réunissant, faire une simple chanson d’un seul coup, et on n’en parlait plus), et en sautant un ou deux titres, on bouffe l’album en moins d’une demi-heure. On en viendrait à regretter le fait que le groupe n’ait pas inclues quelques morceaux des Ep précédents, Maybes et Vertical en tête.
Mais mais mais… certaines tracks de Crooks & Lovers sont les morceaux les plus cool de l’univers. Des missives comme Before I move off, Carbonated, Field, Mayor… Tout est dosé à la perfection, ce qui me fascine avec ce groupe. Crooks & Lovers, c’est des rythmes incroyables, ces petites voix putes qui te susurrent à l’oreille auxquelles tu réponds “oui ça va bien et toi?”, claquer des doigts, manger une crêpe au miel, boire un pepsi cola.
Le disque est court, oui. Aucun problème, on l’écoutera toujours au moins deux fois.

Haha, c’est proprement énorme de revoir compiler toutes les damnées anecdotes/jeux de mots/ressentis postés sur GK en une seule et même critique enrobée de quelques expressions difficilement pas ressortables lors des longs repas de famille. Dat’ way of life, word.
Et concernant Crooks & Lovers BEN OUAIS C’EST DÉCEVANT VOILA ON EST D’ACCORDS. Potentiel fou, même mieux que ça, on se seraient même bien contentés de retrouver la structure espacée des morceaux des deux EPs calquée sur la base des morceaux de l’album tellement ça marche bien. C’est comme BOC, pas de surprise, on sait que ça va être coincé dans une structure que l’on connaît bien et pourtant merde, ça nous met sur la gueule à chaque nouvelle réécoute, on en redemande, on en VEUT. Et puis paf, ils nous balancent un disque frustré qui sent le “pas fini” à mort, qui aurait mérité ne serait ce que deux semaines de travail intensif pour que l’on se retrouve face à une perle sans concurrent cette année. Ben non, Mount Kimbie ça buzze, alors voilà sortie frustrée qu’on va écouter une vingtaine fois sans qu’on laisse passer ce sentiment. PUTAIN.
Bon, espérons que James Blake et son premier LP sauront se révéler à la hauteur de la tâche. PARCE QUE VOILA MOI JE SUIS YOMB.

J’avoue sinon je suis d’accord avec toi, bien que moins dur. Le disque est pas fini, trop court, bancal, mais il a des morceaux qui tuent tellement que ça passe. C’est un peu comme le Gil Scott Heron en fait (dans la structure hein)

Apres pour le debat FlyLo vs Mount Kimbie, c’est pas vraiment valable, c’est assez diffèrent. Quand je les compare, c’est clairement en terme de préférences. Apres, il est clair que si je n’apprécie pas forcément les albums de FLy Lo, je vois bien que le mec a clairement quelque chose à apporter à la musique électronique… Il me fait halluciner sur certains morceaux, que je trouve incroyables (son Zodiac Shit, son remix du I feel like dyin’ de Lil Wayne, son Ancestors…)
Mount Kimbie, c’est plus terre à terre, rien de révolutionnaire. Mais c’est TELLEMENT bien fait, tellement léché, que j’adore, vraiment…

Apres pour le debat FlyLo vs Mount Kimbie, c’est pas vraiment valable, c’est assez diffèrent. Quand je les compare, c’est clairement en terme de préférences. Apres, il est clair que si je n’apprécie pas forcément les albums de FLy Lo, je vois bien que le mec a clairement quelque chose à apporter à la musique électronique… Il me fait halluciner sur certains morceaux, que je trouve incroyables (son Zodiac Shit, son remix du I feel like dyin’ de Lil Wayne, son Ancestors…)
Mount Kimbie, c’est plus terre à terre, rien de révolutionnaire. Mais c’est TELLEMENT bien fait, tellement léché, que j’adore, vraiment…
