Hot Pocket, Frog Jambon
Il est clairement acté que le label Planet-Mu s’est écarté de ses aventures electronica sibyllines pour le Dubstep rugueux et le Footwork sous crack, il arrive parfois que de petites perles émergent. Come On Primates Show Your Teeth ! sorti en 2007 en faisait parti, sublime disque de drill’bass épique, mélodique et violente. Ce disque cristallisait un peu tout ce qui se faisaient de mieux dans le genre, avec un coté très référencé certes, et une recette un peu systématique, mais diablement maitrisée. Des trésors comme “Bo’Aright”, ou “Rig of the Jarkness” (cette progression…) et surtout “Dungeon Hills” n’avaient rien à envier aux maitres de l’IDM, et soufflaient la tempête tout en pétrissant les cœurs, prolongeant un exercice déjà parfaitement mené sur Gonglot, premier LP sur Mu en 2005. Frog Pocket, écossais de son état, pouvait compter sur sa maitrise du violon (entre autre) pour sortir du tout électronique, et offrir à ses constructions drill’n bass des facettes classiques belles à pleurer. Depuis ce disque, il y a 5 ans donc, plus aucune nouvelle, pas une sortie, rien, que dalle. On avait presque oublié l’artiste. Jusqu’à ce que sorte de nul part, sur une structure ressuscitée pour l’occasion, un nouvel LP intitulé Frog and the Volcano!. Ouvre les yeux, il t’emmène en voyage, sur un nuage, ouvre les yeux.
5 ans ont passé, et Frog Pocket n’a pas vraiment changé. Les dix premières minutes passées sur l’album suffisent de convaincre que l’écossais est toujours aussi sauvage, sans jamais oublier l’émotion. Pourtant, si le musicien n’a pas muté, il a évolué sur certaines sonorités, dans la manière de faire exploser ses morceaux notamment. Bholcan démarre sur des violons ombrageux, se déliant pendant plus de 2minutes, avant qu’un rythme électro lent, hiphop de fin de vie, rampe en gémissant sur un champ de bataille dévasté. L’orchestre se réveille peu à peu, on est clairement dans la fin d’un film de guerre, avec nappes mortuaires et guitares lancinantes. Le beat vrille progressivement, trébuche, hésite. Et c’est la dernière scène, l’assaut du désespoir, la charge finale qui déboule : énorme mur du son, guitares saturées, goules hurlantes, shoegaze de fin du monde. On a pigé, Frog Pocket ne fait plus hurler ses machines lors des climax, il convie un mur de gratte noisy pour t’arracher la gueule. Même effet, puissance décuplée. La fin du morceau est désolée, on croirait presque retomber sur la Mezzanine, qui vient de se prendre un tapis de bombe sur la tronche.
Ces déchirures shoegaze-noisy, on va les retrouver plus d’une fois sur cette galette, avec l’éponyme Frog and the Volcano notamment. Là aussi, on va nous servir une longue introduction, et un rythme claudiquant. Ca prend énormément de temps pour se poser, pour t’enlacer, pour te griller les neurones. Pour un titre qui dure 10 minutes, c’est de coutume me direz vous. Oui, d’autant plus que les détails ne manquent pas, que chaque soubresaut de rythme s’imprime, chaque petit changement délecte. C’est céleste, aérien, fragile. Beau surtout. On sent le truc monter, on perçoit la violence sous jacente du morceau, qui s’emballe, péte graduellement un plomb. 4minutes, tu commences à retenir ton souffle, tu sens que ça va partir. 5 minutes, Shoegaze épique sur drill’n bass cramée, c’est sublime, épique, ton cœur est écartelé. Tu vois Pale Saints qui voudrait faire un feat avec Flashbulb ? M83 qui voudrait poser ses nappes sur du Aphex Twin ? C’est un peu le même trip. Et ça continue d’exploser, de gronder, de rugir. Le rythme se transforme en perceuse, les claviers en typhons. De l’or en putain de barres.
Tu veux continuer à te faire poncer le cerveau ? Pas de problème, un peu plus loin se trouve Spider Fog, qui démarre comme une Desert Session dans Joshua Tree, avec une guitare près des dunes, avant qu’un rythme commence à cavaler tranquillement. Tu visualises bien Frog Pocket lancer sa boite à rythme et jouer de la gratte dessus, en tirant sur une clope sans filtre. Au bout de 6 minutes (le titre en fait 11), on commence à voguer vers l’IDM, avec un beat plus frappé, et quelques nappes à l’horizon. Ca commence à groove sec, Chris Isaac a fait ses valises pour être remplacé par des sonorités aciiiiiiiid et de brusques revirements de métronome. Jusqu’au traumatisme final, énorme mur noisy à t’arracher les implants PIP, attaque héroïque d’un androïde qui veut tout détruire sur son passage. D’une violence abusée, mais brève (orgasme d’environ 1 minute) qui prend tout son sens dans cette conclusion ultra chaotique. A place to Bury my ears, please.
Je vois venir les vieux de la vieille : “ouai mais Frog Pocket, ben il fait tout le temps tout cramer à la fin de ses morceaux, au bout d’un moment, c’est un peu redondant t’as vu”, et je ne peux pas dire le contraire, c’est même le principal (seul ?) reproche que l’on pouvait faire à Come On Primates… LP. Ici, c’est moins systématique, et ses dégâts atomiques sont bien disséminés dans l’album. Car ici, les morceaux drill’n bass ne se finissent plus forcément par une charge de babouins en ruts.
Crow Hill Jig lorgnera du coté des après midi pluvieux avec ses notes cristallines et ses violons lancinants, le tout parsemé d’un petit rythme qui claque sévère. Taquets imprimés sur la nuque, frappant sans crier gare, les boites à pensées du bonhomme servant une electronica racée qui va virer au mélancolico-mystique avec cette guitare de toute beauté, et ses cordes cinématographiques. Au lieu de s’emballer, le morceau deviendra aérien, sublime conclusion pleine d’optimisme et de lumière, avec une mélodie à chialer et des soubresauts rythmiques qui contenteront les oreilles en quêtes de fêlures. Négatif presque parfait des tracks énervées du dessus, on troque ici les grondements industriels pour l’amour et les sourires candides. Ca me ferait presque chialer tellement c’est beau tiens.
Prog Focket (ahah) n’invoquera pas les ouragans non plus, et partira sur une drill’n bass très ressemblante à ce que l’on pouvait trouver dans les anciens albums du bonhomme. Ca craque de partout oui, mais ça sent surtout les grands espaces, les courses à plusieurs dans les prairies bardées d’herbe verte, écrasées sous un soleil de plomb. Il y a tout, guitare, violon, rythmbox en roue libre et nappes larmoyantes, et c’est foutrement bien fait. Castle Green fera méchamment penser au Flashbulb de l’époque Kirlian Selection (le morceau aurait pu se glisser dedans sans soucis) et conjugue electronica fragile avec cordes et notes de simili-harpe pour te draguer le palpitant. Même ton chat adore ça.
Enfin, Frog Pocket, comme d’habitude, ce n’est pas que de l’electro déstructurée ou rugissante, mais aussi quelques vignettes acoustiques bien branlées, où John Wilson nous montre comment bien manier le violon et la guitare. Bird Flower Jig fera un peu flipper avec ses percussions aquatiques, mais le bref Monimail Tower, ou la conclusion Snow Dance voleront bien des cœurs avec leurs cordes pincées et leurs mélodies asthmatiques.
Bon, impossible de ne pas révéler la grande similarité entre certaines sonorités de morceaux de ce nouvel LP avec celui sorti il y a 5 ans (Crow Hill Jig ou Prog focket auraient clairement pu se glisser dans Come On Primates…) et le musicien continue de faire des morceaux en mode “longue montée > explosion > conclusion acoustique”. Certes. Mais putain, comme ce type le fait bien. Et puis Come On Primates… était un album qui te donnait beaucoup de bonheur, alors que cette nouvelle galette lui ressemble, on peut lui pardonner, il y a plus grave dans ma vie.
Car même si l’on sait presque d’avance comment Frog Pocket va faire évoluer ses morceaux (si l’on excepte l’enchanteresse conclusion de Crow Hill Jig, innatendue), comment il va malmener ses derniers, on ne peut que s’incliner devant sa maitrise de l’exercice. Impossible de renier le plaisir fou à écouter ces longues tirades orchestrales et furibardes, ces fresques gorgées d’émotion et de violence. Sans compter que ce petit coté shoegaze noisy vs drill sur certains morceaux (Frog and the Volcano, ce chef d’œuvre) donnent de nouvelles couleurs à l’écossais, et rappelleront parfois même les meilleurs moments de World’s End Girlfriend.
Frog Pocket sort un album electronica hors temps, un album qui aurait pu sortir en 2001 comme en 2020. Il y a des recettes qui ne se périment pas, et quand il s’agit de se faire arracher la gueule grâce à des envolées drill’n bass de folie et des mélodies superbes, on ne peut que demander du rab.
