Autrefois patron du breakcore et de l’IDM craqué avec son cultissime et indispensable The Action Packed Mentallist Brings You The Fucking Jam, ou les sympathiques Kill Sound Before Sound Kills You et GQ On The EQ++, le vénézuélien c’est donné la mission de prendre à contre pied ses auditeurs, chaque année ou presque. Pour les nostalgiques du vieux Kid606, fini la techno hystérique passée au mixeur, le musicien affirmant que la seule façon de le pousser à recomposer de la musique fracassée est “qu’on lui donne une machine à remonter le temps pour une époque où le breakcore n’existait pas”.
Alors Kid606 a vogué vers des terres plus apaisées via le ouaté Resilience, avant de sortir un excellent Pretty Girls Make Raves et un album étrange de drone-ambiant à la pochette et au titre inoubliable, Songs About Fucking Steve Albini. Et voici que sans prévenir, un Lost In The Game déboule dans nos rayons, apportant son lot de mystères quand à la nouvelle orientation du bonhomme, qui n’a pas perdu son humour, au vu du tracklisting proposé.
Bon, l’année dernière, il y a deux types de musique qui ont drôlement bien marchés, et que l’on entendait un peu partout : La juke, via planet-mu, transformée et modelée par Kuedo et Machinedrum… et le Hiphop enfumé, plein de purple syrup, balancé par des mecs comme Clams Casino ou Harry Fraud. Et bien, le nouveau Kid606 se pose pile entre les deux. Godspeed You African American Emperor (ahah) commence superbement l’album, avec ces synthés pesants, lourds, poisseux, qui nous semblent tout droit échappés d’un vieux Abstract Keal Agram. De façon très progressive, un beat se fait entendre, noyé dans ma mélasse, tonnant dan le noir, et une petite mélodie cristalline fini de transformer la fresque en vrai hiphop slow-motion ultra caverneux. Horrifique ? nah t’inquiète ne te fais pas bile, passe le à fond dans ta wago direction Cluster ville.
Gimme Summer ne donnera certainement pas des envies de playa, mais plus de psychotropes missionnés pour te mettre faya. Gros claviers bien ronds, mélodie et rythme qui donnent envie de mettre les mains au dessus de la tête, avec claquements de doigts en prime. Même Asap Rocky trouverait ça trop cotonneux. Mais pas toi, tu t’enfonces dans ton canapé avec ta bière en dodelinant lentement de la tête, avant de t’enfoncer dans les lymbes de ton inconscient. Et tout le disque est dans cet ordre d’idée, mi-pimp mi-coma, comme si tu conduisais un Low-rider sur les plages de Miami, la gueule débordant de rivotril et l’âme encore embuée par la mort de l’amour de ta vie. Mélange étonnant. Pas nouveau, mais étonnant. Comme si Kid606 voulait pousser le délire du Purple Hiphop encore plus loin, quitte à le faire flirter avec l’ambiant décanillé, aussi dense qu’une vase dégoulinant des enceintes.
I Want To Join a Cult, un peu plus loin dans l’album, est peut être le plus beau titre de ce Lost In The Game, avec cette mélodie superbe qui n’en fini plus de se délier, ce coté rêverie hiphop vs rentre-dedans céleste. Pas vraiment d’évolution pendant ces 5 minutes, juste de la brume enveloppant une mélopée planante, et un beat sourd en horizon. Meeguk So Horny lorgnera lui aussi du coté de Clams Casino, avec claviers bancaux en prime, avec une conclusion super émo qui draguera plus d’une colonne vertébrale. Reste qu’avec des bombes abstract hiphop screwed&chopped à la Big Black Ketamine Jesus (ahah), tu frôles le tube MTV passé en slow motion, que tout Mc ayant plus d’un flow pain aux raisins aimerait foutre dans sa mixtape. Même combat pour les excellents I Need To Start a Cult, Night Club vs Book Club ou Baroque and Out Of Money (ahah).
Et le parallèle (certes ténu) fait plus haut avec des français adeptes d’abstract n’est pas si stupide en entendant des morceaux comme New Boss Same As Old Boss, et ses synthés saccadés, saturés et sombres, très proches de ce que peut balancer nos chéris de chez Depth Affect (la similitude est frappante, même si la fresque de Kid606 est bien plus embrumée, et épouse un rythme plus footwork). Le morceau est une grosse mandale, et l’on aimerait vraiment entendre deux trois rappeurs s’ébattre sur ces claviers graisseux.
En mixant les rythmes épileptiques de la Juke (ici ultra étouffés) à des drones drogués et des atmosphères hiphop presque screwed&chopped, Kid606 balance un album qui n’invente rien (mais alors, vraiment rien) mais qui déroule sa musique avec classe et prestance, en te filant pile ce que voulait tes esgourdes pour les mois d’automne. Un album qui ne marquera pas sur l’instant, mais qui devrait, petit à petit, s’immiscer dans nos synapses et s’installer durablement lors de trop longues nuits à rester éveillé.
Le LP porte bien son nom, car Lost in the game, Kid606 l’est surement, prenant la place d’un producteur de hiphop perdu dans son monde, à pondre des instrues de neurasthéniques laissant poindre de succinctes réminiscences pimp. Boss du rap game perdu dans la blanche, enfermé dans un labyrinthe de fumée, à n’en plus trouver la sortie. Le rapprochement avec des pontes comme Clams Casino ou Kuedo coule de source. On sent d’ailleurs que ce dernier a ouvert une brèche que beaucoup vont arpenter (il suffit d’écouter les premiers extrait du prochain µ-Ziq, qui viennent de disparaitre du soundcloud malheuresement), et que le Severant du bonhomme risque d’être énormément cité en influence dans les années à venir, sorte de Untrue 2011, même si Kuedo semble être condamné à rester dans l’ombre, célébré par une petite poignée de producteurs seulement.
Le seul défaut réel de cet album de Kid606 est évident : ne pas avoir débaucher de Mc pour poser sur la musique de Lost In The Game. Car cela aurait pu devenir un superbe album de Cloud Rap complètement perché, transformant ces élucubrations autistes en ôde à la drogue musique. A écouter sur de bonnes grosses enceintes qui ronflent un max, par contre, cela me semble indispensable de le préciser. La nuit, une bière à la main, posé.

J’ai toujours eu du mal avec la discographie du Monsieur, c’est souvent du un disque sur deux qui passe vu qu’il change de style en permanence. Remarque, ce n’est pas moi qui m’en plaindrai. Mais depuis le Pretty Girls Make Rave (et Chicken Fight surtout en fait), j’ai de moins en moins de surprises. Je vais jeter une oreille sur celui-ci.
