Ca me rendait dingue, fou, je trouvais ça proche du blasphème, et pestais comme un dingue si le compositeur n’avait pas inclus une version “instrumentale” dans son LP. Je n’explique pas du tout cette façon de penser, je ne me souviens même plus des groupes en question. Mais j’ai toujours ce sentiment pesant, d’avoir, à un moment de ma jeunesse, écarté connement les artistes electronica qui, soudainement, se mettaient à convier des chanteurs sur leurs compos. Ce qui était d’autant plus illogique car à coté de cela, j’étais dingue de trucs comme Chemical Brothers, Lamb ou The Prodigy, qui n’étaient pas avares en “vocals”.
Le plus marrant, c’est le revirement opéré au bout d’un moment, sans explication. Sur la majorité de ce que j’écoutais, je me disais “putain mais pourquoi personne ne chante là dessus ?”. Je me suis toujours demandé pourquoi aucun Mc n’avait jamais eu envie de poser sur le Dawn Chorus de Boards Of Canada par exemple. Merde, si un américain l’avait fait, Asap Rocky aurait eu dix ans de retard ! Je me souviens, peut être au début des années 2000, Thom Yorke avait émis le souhait de chanter sur des morceaux d’Autechre, ce qui n’a jamais été fait, alors que c’était une idée géniale. Bref, ce que je honnissais plus jeune me faisait fantasmer quelques années plus tard. Anticon avait d’ailleurs réussi à assouvir cette envie d’entendre des gens rapper/chanter sur des musiques bizarres, et mon amour pour ce label vient peut être précisément de là à la base. Ils avaient comblé un vide dans mes oreilles (avec Clouddead précisément).
Pourquoi je parle de tout ça ? Parce que Yagya sort un nouvel album. Yagya, c’est un islandais qui avait sorti un sublime disque il y a quelques années, un certain Will I dream during the process qui avait un artwork à tomber, et un Rigning bien sympa lui aussi un peu plus tard. Oscillant entre ambiant cristallin, et Techno un poil dubby, le bonhomme frôlait bien souvent le grand chelem sur ses disques. Alors quand The Inescapable Decay Of My Heart fut annoncé, bien des palpitants s’emballèrent à l’idée de replonger dans l’univers ouaté de Yagya.
Et c’est là que les deux paragraphes du dessus interviennent. L’islandais a eu l’idée étonnante (au regard de ses précédentes sortie j’entends) de nous sortir un disque où des chanteurs/euses seront conviés sur tous les morceaux, ou presque. Une galette instrumentale sera incluse pour les grincheux. Bonne nouvelle en soi, l’univers de Yagya, confronté à des voix sensibles, ça ne peut que marcher, et éviter que l’artiste fasse du surplace grâce à cette ouverture de recette. Puis on écoute le premier morceau clipé, et on a un doute. Tears Will Fall, feat Ellen Kristjánsdóttir, pour ne pas le nommer : la compo derriere est incroyable. Ces synthés cristallins, qui perlent et se perdent dans des échos dub, ce petit rythme techno présent mais discret, c’est très beau. La voix de la dame est parfaitement placée aussi, sensible et tire-larmes. Pourtant il y a quelque chose qui ne marche pas. Quelque chose qui gène, quelque chose de gnangnan dans ce morceau, qui flirterait presque avec du mauvais Morcheeba du début des années 2000 ou un Everything But The Girl complètement faisandé. Alors on se rassure, on se dit que l’instrue est foutrement reussie (réellement) et que l’on va se rabattre sur la version instrumentale du disque : Après quelques minutes à écouter ces musiques dénuées de chanteur parasite, les claviers ne finissent plus de s’enrouler dans nos tympans, on dodeline de la tête et l’on se prend à rêver de balades dans les cieux. Mais rapidement, quelque chose cloche. Il manque un truc à ces morceaux : les voix.
Ce Yagya souffre d’un mal TERRIBLE, pas si commun dans la musique. Ce problème, je le nomme le “Ni-Ni”. Je m’explique, avec un exemple trendy et fashion : tu farfouilles sur youtube, et tombe sur le dernier morceau de Usher, Climax. Tu écoutes le morceau, tu te dis “putain, cette instru est magnifique, c’est mortel, que ce chanteur dégage de là“. Alors tu vas sur Hype Machine, tu cherches “Climax Instrumental” pendant une bonne demi heure, avant de la trouver, et de la lancer sur itunes. Ouai, mortel. Mais il manque quelque chose : le chanteur. La prod’ ne marche plus toute seule. Tu as envie d’entendre le morceau sans le chanteur, mais dès l’absence de ce dernier, il manque gravement à la bonne marche du tout. Climax ne marche ni avec Usher, ni sans lui. Ni-Ni. Et pourtant le morceau est vraiment plaisant ! Mais coincé à frustrer son monde jusqu’à la mort.
Ok, j’ai réussi l’exploit de parler de Usher dans un article sur Yagya, revenons à nos moutons. Sur ce Tears Will Fall, le morceau démonte au premier abord, mais la chanteuse pose gravement problème. Sauf que quand on se rabat sur la version instrumentale, on est frustré de l’absence de cette dernière. Car le morceau n’est tout simplement pas fait pour être écouté sans voix. Ou que l’oreille s’est habituée, même après une écoute, à entendre une mégère geindre sur les claviers.
Et ce syndrome, on le retrouve sur une bonne tripotée de morceaux de ce Inescapable Decay Of My Heart. Gabriel, My Star is a new song, Dronwed in Dreams, Waiting for the Rain… tous partagent ce coté chant de l’horreur ultra daté et ringard… tout en étant sublimes dans leurs instrues, avec ces synthés ahurissants dans leur traitement (ceux de Drowned in Dreams me filent des frissons). Sans compter les paroles ultra niaises et clichées qui te donneront, après 30 minutes d’écoute, envie de foutre du Godflesh à fond en égorgeant des poulets (I’m waiting for the rain to wash me away… / sometimes I feel that the only way to survive is to kill my dreams… blablablabla, mon dieu donnez moi deux doigts que je puisse les coller dans ma gorge et me faire vomir).
Malgré ça, tu n’arrives pas à te convaincre du fait que l’album est raté. Pour ce coté Ni-Ni d’une part, mais aussi car Yagya n’a pas oublié ses premiers amours, et file des morceaux dénués de vocals. Modelés dès le départ pour être sans chanteur. Et là, c’est méchamment beau. Ca frise la perfection. Reverbs and Delays qui porte plutôt bien son nom, flirte avec l’absolu, et n’aurait pas fait tache dans un disque de Modell. Techno aérienne pleine d’échos dub, avec des claviers à tomber, et une richesse folle dans les textures que n’ont pas les autres morceaux accompagnés de chanteurs. Ce Reverbs and Delays, c’est un peu l’orgasme pour les amateurs de Techno-ambiant, avec ces synthés faramineux. Il y a aussi The Salt On Her Cheeks, très belle, avec cette mélodie cristalline en filagramme, qui emplit graduellement le spectre pour s’étaler dans tes oreilles et te filer une érection auditive du tonnerre. Merde, dans les 4minutes, c’est à chialer tellement ça frise la perfection. Un album entièrement de ce calibre aurait littéralement changé le game de la techno ambiant, et poussé ses rivaux au clash fébrile via vidéos youtube.
Et sur le disque, il y a aussi un morceau qui marche de façon incroyable, malgré la présence d’un chanteur. C’est Cold Hands. La mélodie va friser bien des colonnes vertébrales. L’introduction va faire chavirer bien des coeurs. Les petits synthés d’après refrain vont dresser bien des chevelures. Même le chant masculin, grave mais aérien de Aðalsteinn Guðmundsson, copule avec grâce sur la techno de Yagya. Et le plus drôle, c’est que le morceau marche aussi très bien en version instrumentale ! Un petit bijou.
Alors que faire ? Conseiller ce disque en sachant qu’il frustrera la plupart de ses auditeurs ? Qu’il pourrait passer dans le même mouvement comme un horrible disque lounge-guimauve ou un album de techno-dub-pop magnifique ? Faudrait-il conseiller de s’engouffrer directement sur les versions instrumentales pour que l’oreille n’ait pas le temps de s’enticher des voix parcourant la majorité du disque ? Conseiller de prendre le LP pour écouter ses petits bijoux (Cold Hands x2, Reverbs and Delays, The Salt On Her Cheeks, la deuxième moitié de Bright Moonlight Sky) en priorité, et voir ce que l’on peut apprécier dans le reste du LP, en sachant que l’on avance sur un terrain miné, blindé de lyrics horribles ?
Impossible à dire. The Inescapable Decay of my Heart, est un excellent mauvais album, un superbe LP frustrant, une déception de qualité. Un disque aux synthés fous, qui nous font diablement regretter le fait que Yagya n’ait pas tenté le coup d’un nouveau disque instrumental esquissé sur seulement deux morceaux du LP.
