Ital Tek n’est pas un mec né de la dernière ondée. Fer de lance du label Planet-Mu lors de la première vague Dubstep du label en 2006/07, à coté de MRK1, Pinch, Distance ou Boxcutter, Ital Tek avait débarqué avec un Ep et un album (l’excellent Cyclical) rudes mais néanmoins mélodiques, symbolisant le dubstep d’il y a une demi-douzaine d’années : peu de wobble bass, mais aux forces telluriques sacrement instables, avec une belle part d’émotion dans le bordel. La musique Ital Tek prenait tout son sens dans cette dualité, avec des tours de force comme le sublime White Mark, vraie caverne de glace à l’intro magique, qui se retrouvait défoncée par un rouleau compresseur.
Le label se cherchant un peu après le succès des années pré-2010, l’anglais sort un album le cul entre deux chaises, mais qui défonce, Midnight Color, avant se de s’engouffrer dans la vague Juke/footwork de Planet Mu, pour sortir le très bon Nebula Dance, un peu écrasé par les sorties de Machinedrum ou Kuedo, mais au moins aussi intéressant à écouter. Cavalcades de snares, synthés qui s’envolaient à n’en plus finir, cet album se démarquait de ceux de ses collègues par une propension plus importante à lorgner vers l’Idm.
Autant dire que l’on attendait durement la prochaine livraison du bonhomme, Control, surtout après avoir entendu les quelques extraits.
Premier étonnement, derrière son artwork superbe se cache une durée assez frustrante. Control est un mini-album, ou un faste EP, pointant légèrement en dessous des 30 minutes. Durée d’écoute de plus en plus fréquente, et pas foncièrement gênante si le disque est à 100% pertinent. Et de ce coté là, Ital Tek ne s’embarrasse pas de fioritures :
Fireflies démarre sur les chapeaux de roues, voix d’anges en boucle, rythme rafale proche de la drum’n’bass, ça part dans tous les sens, avant l’arrivée d’une mélodie limpide vers 1min20, un synthé que l’on va quasiment pas entendre mais qui porte complètement le morceau. Les changements violents de métronomes n’y feront rien, la charge semble sans pitié, elle est au final quasi sensuelle.
C’est ce coté “je passe à tabac ta colonne vertébrale de sale émo” qui prédomine tout le long de la galette, ce sentiment d’opposition en exergue sur des morceaux comme Control, qui sort les beats pachydermiques, bien ronds et chauds, pour un début de track assez lugubre. Sauf que le tout va vite partir soudainement dans une house dreamy assez ensoleillée, en mode lunette de soleil-décapotable à Miami, le tout filmé en VHS. Claviers uk, rythme qui s’emporte, ambiance posée, on apprécie le voyage.
Encore plus beau, et pourtant beatless, c’est Zero, petite fresque ambiant-mélancolique, à la mélodie parfaite, qui dressera bien des cheveux sur la caboche. Rien de spécial, interlude dans la durée mais pas dans l’impact émotionnel, cette vignette aurait du durer 4 minutes, afin de se voir parachuter directement à la tête des plus beaux morceaux du disque.
Mais justement, à la pointe, deux morceaux, ahurissants, écrasant toute concurrence sur la galette, voir même sur ce qui est sorti sur planet-mu en 2013. Violet de son petit nom, qui récupère les voix samplées du départ, mais transpose le tout dans un écrin élégiaque. Mélodie uniquement composées d’exaltations, quand le rythme fait son entrée, c’est déjà la chair de poule. Et tout ce putain de bordel ne va faire que progresser, pour toucher à la perfection. C’est comme si le Moments In Love d’Art Of Noise se faisait sodomiser par un Kuedo en goguette, la fragilité, la transpiration. Peaux qui se frôlent, ce morceau est vivant, il se déverse dans tes oreilles en rampant, jouissance lente suintant le cul, BO d’un porno plagiant Gravity, d’un coït en apesanteur de deux personnes qui s’aiment à en exploser la terre.
Et tu n’as même pas le temps de profiter de la descente d’endorphine, que Challenger Deep déboule et te file en 5 seconde la claque de l’année. Une poignée de seconde, car tu es convaincu dès les premiers notes de ce synthé complètement fou que le morceau va être gigantesque. Rouleau compresseur affectif, arpèges hystériques, beauté folle, pure et lumineuse, le morceau broie tes tympans, ras de marée. Tu penses que c’est parfait, et mais ça devient encore plus dingue à 1min27, avec ce synthé Blade Runner qui déboule de nul part et t’arrache le cœur. Putain ce clavier, merde. Et le tout qui continue de tout brutaliser, mélodie napalm, clavier de fin du monde. Et cette sortie en bruit blanc complètement dingue, ce machin que l’on entend que pour une demi douzaine de seconde à partir de 2min30, c’est pas un machin qui t’arrache la gueule ? La conclusion nickel entérinera notre avis : ce morceau est trop haut.
Dommage qu’Ultra, seule petite déception du disque, ne continue pas sur cette lancée héroïque, cassant un peu le trip avec ses rythmes hardcore et ses percussions cheloues. Heureusement, le tout se rattrape in-extremis avec break intervenant au milieu du morceau nous laissait planer sur de jolies choses, avec le pied bourrin du départ qui passe à la trappe. Jupiter Ascent partira dans un trip clairement Jungle, assez rétro au départ, mais qui va là aussi rapidement évoluer sur un apparat plus mystique, avec cette bonne idée de laisser la jolie ligne mélodique s’exprimer. Le disque se terminera sur le court et ambiant Doom/Dream, qui sans être révolutionnaire, rempli plutôt bien son office avec sa jolie litanie, que l’on aurait, comme pour Zero, entendre un peu plus longtemps…
Control est court, mais Control tabasse dur. Difficile de reprocher à Ital Tek cette durée frustrante si un vrai LP est en approche sur début 2014. Parce que si le bordel est aussi bon que ce que laisse entrevoir ce mini-album, on risque de se prendre une mandale du tonnerre. Car Control contient certains des morceaux les plus aboutis de l’anglais avec en point d’orgue le tryptique Zero / Violet / Challenger Deep, cœur de ce disque, incontournable, beauté folle.
Court album d’un grand bonhomme, cela augure de sacrées mandales pour la prochaine livraison.
