Sur la musique, on va on vient. Il y a des périodes de vide, de léger désintérêt, à lire des livres plutôt que de se perdre dans les notes. Après un début d’année en fanfare, et des annonces de disques qui risquent de bien martyriser les tympans, ce mois d’avril a peiné mon cœur, à défaut de le faire frissonner. Quelques bonnes sorties, mais rien qui ne m’a donné envie de m’adonner à une écriture hors contrôle après 10 écoutes d’affilées. Pourtant il y a de belles choses, des albums solides en ce moment. Des chroniques de prévues, des Lp à venir (d’ailleurs il arrive un jour le Kettel ou quoi ?). Alors on vogue de singles en singles sur youtube, nouvelle façon d’écouter de la musique, juke-box démesuré, infini et gratuit.
Et puis on tombe sur de belles surprises, qui se développent finalement tout le long d’un album. Comme ce Thug Entrancer, sorti un peu de nul part (si ce n’est qu’il est hébergé sur le label de Daniel Lopatin, ce qui aurait tendance à me faire fuir), et qui n’a rien d’un gangsta menaçant, malgré le nom. Et pourtant, sa musique est bien ombrageuse, et sent les douilles encore brulantes.
Difficile de disséquer un disque pareil. Extrêmement homogène, Death After Life oscillera constamment entre synthés sombres et rythmes rapides pendant 65 min. Pistes simplement numérotées, toutes nommées Death After Life, avant de briser la faucheuse et de partir sur une renaissance (Ready To Live) en bout de parcours. En trompe la mort / l’œil, Death After Life I est pourtant le titre le plus évident du disque. Celui qui pose les bases, qui laisse respirer la mélodie. Sirènes morbides, notes cristallines mais loin d’être guillerettes, rythmes squelettiques. On n’est pas encore tombé en enfer, mais les portes métalliques sont bien en vues. C’est pourtant beau, presque rassurant, légèrement sci-fi, un peu juke, comme un Kuedo en bout de course, complètement déshydraté, la peau sur les os, qui rampe dans le déserts avec des vautours lui tournant déjà autour de la tête.
Er l’album ne filera pas plus de billes. Ne pas s’attendre à un banger dancefloor ou une tirade émo comme il est coutume d’avoir dans ce genre de Lp. Que dalle. Même une 303 tournant seule dans le vide ferait plus marrer que ce Death After Life. Il y a parfois un peu d’ennui (Death II), mais il est vite rattrapé par de sacrés morceaux, comme Death IV, et sa longue chute en spirale droguée, hypnotique en mode juke flinguée pendant plus de 8minutes, lente overdose en slow motion. Si tes yeux ne se révulsent pas après écoute, c’est que tu n’es pas humain.
Deux coup de butoirs pour te sortir de la torpeur ouatée et morbide : Death V, le seul morceau qui se rapprochera d’un tabassage en règle, et Death III, qui va tester les limites de l’audible en fin de match, histoire de provoquer des accidents de voiture sur les autoroutes du monde. Les Ready To Live seront légèrement moins violents, plus cotonneux, sans être rassurants. Ils laissent un peu de place à la mélodie, à la mélancolie aussi, même si la rave est toujours de mise (deuxième partie de Live 1). Mais va pas falloir attendre à ce que Thug Entrancer nous mâche le travail.
Death After Life est un album dur, linéaire, loin d’être perméable. C’est pourtant un bel objet, noir, diamant obscur qui pourra autant passionner qu’ennuyer, mais toujours en suffoquant. On n’est pas loin d’un récent Lee Bannon, mais c’est surtout dans un vieux disque comme le Shinsou de Dj Krush que l’on trouvera des équivalents. Pas dans les sonorités, bien évidemment, mais dans ces longues plages bileuses et angoissantes, aux motifs récurrents tout le long du disque, annihilant toute notion de temps. Techno, Footwork, Abstract, il y a un peu de tout dans ce bordel squelettique.
Certains pourront arguer sur le fait que l’album manque de moments forts, ou de tirades épiques, ce qui est partiellement vrai (III, V et Live I sont néanmoins en embuscade). Mais en enfer, pas besoin de cavalcade, autant prendre son temps, on a l’éternité pour mariner. Le diable est dans les détails, oui. Et chez Thug Entrancer, c’est surtout le diable, tout le temps.
