De Squarepusher, beaucoup savent qu’il est considéré comme un des meilleurs bassiste au monde, mais surtout comme un fou dégénéré des qu’il se planque derrière ses machines. Ce que l’on ne sait pas, ou presque, c’est que ce génie psychopathe a un frère, Andy, qui officie sous le nom de Ceephax Il est toujours difficile d’appréhender la musique d’un “frère de…” pour elle-même quand on a comme aîné l’une des plus grande figure de la musique électronique depuis une dizaine d’année. Officiant tout d’abord sous le nom de “Ceephax Acid Crew” à coup de TB303, il a distillé quelques galettes plus ou moins officielles, plus des remix pour son frère, entre autre, avant de signer sur le mythique label Rephlex, créé par Aphex Twin au début des années 90.
Comme d’habitude avec Rephlex on va taper dans le minimaliste avec l’artwork de l’album. Mais ce coté « audiovisuel » foireux, renforcé par les captures d’écrans dignes de jeux Atari d’antan, colle plutôt au contenu de l’album… On va y revenir. Pour l’anecdote, on y trouve aussi une photo de Ceephax au milieu d’une véritable montagne de machines (son Home studio ?) composée d’une vingtaine de machines, synthés and co… Plus que sa ressemblance physique frappante avec Squarepusher, c’est surtout le même coté “autiste-étouffé-dans-les-fils-et-machines-plus-ou-moins-identifiées” qui transpire des le premier instant.
Mais laissons quelques secondes toutes affaires de famille, pour se concentrer justement sur ce que peut nous balancer Ceephax. Et autant le dire tout de suite, on ne va franchement pas être déçu… Apres une courte intro, steve, à l’ambiance plutôt kitsch, parasitée par une voix semblant être habitée par une belle gueule de bois, on débarque directement dans la tornade Jam Jarre. Et franchement, là, grosse claque. Parce que l’appréhension régnait, le disque pouvant soit lorgner vers un ersatz d’electro faite avec les cadavres d’instruments du frangin, soit une pâle copie des travaux de ce dernier.
Tout le contraire, une vraie bombe. On déroule une rythmique martiale sur une ligne de synthé angélique. Des sonorités déboulent de partout et tabassent tout ce qui bouge. C’est juste énorme. Pour se donner une idée, il faut imaginer une mélodie sensible et fluette d’Aphex Twin se faire malmener par des beats sortis d’une Free party… On croirait revenir avant 2000, là ou les TGV drum / jungle pouvaient encore être des tubes, des morceaux de folie emportant tout sur leur passage. Et il faut entendre ces synthés monter, redescendre, se faire défoncer en flirtant avec l’industriel. A vous arracher la colonne vertébrale.
On pourra même, plus que de qualifier cet album de Jungle / Acid / Drum, affirmer qu’il aime mettre un pied dans le chaos sonore, dans le breakbeat bien violenté. Hardcore Raver en portera bien son nom, défonçant toute structure pré-établie dans un enchevêtrements de sonorités froides et peu engageantes. Difficile de respirer, aucune lumière ne perçant la croûte de ce cimetière métallique.
Dans le même style, on lui préférera Here We Gowowowo. Et c’est là que la filiation avec Squarepusher en devient évidente. Car ce titre pourrait sortir tout droit du chef d’oeuvre claustrophobe de ce dernier, “Go Plastic”. Mêmes sonorités froides et désincarnées, folles, lâchées, étouffantes. Mais Ceephax a l’intelligence de glisser de grosses parties Drum and Bass bien oldschool, zébrant la rudesse du tout en la rendant plus accessible (toutes proportions gardées)
Alors oui certaines pistes de ce “Volume One” sont hargneuses. Mais quand on atteint un résultat comme Toxico Gang, la seule possibilité est de se mettre à genoux. Débutant sur une petite ritournelle 8 bits, le morceau va rapidement foncer à toute allure, supplanté par un rythme pachydermique, sourd comme jamais, le tout noyé dans de multiples bruits venus d’ailleurs. Une véritable cavalcade de Beats. Mais là ou cela devient magique, c’est quand une nappe fantomatique descend du ciel pour chapeauter le tout. La cavalcade se mue en vagues d’âmes errantes pilonnées par une rythmique sauvage, qui va s’élever plus haut que jamais.
On serrait bien tenté de gueuler, transpirant : “Aciiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiid !!!!” mais tout est plus complexe, plus travaillé que cela. Un morceau ABSOLUMENT hallucinant.
En parlant d’Acid, on en a aussi, et du vrai, (Ceephax “venant” de ce courant musical) avec Texaco Gang, où l’on nous molestera à vitesse grand V pendant 4 minutes, avant de basculer sur un synthé typiquement Aphex Twin, sombre, fragile, sur le fil. Evidemment, il ne ferra pas long feu, sous les assauts de machines, meurtrières. Superbe.
Mais Ceephax semble avoir un gros penchant pour les vieux jeux vidéos et leurs sonorités, cela n’étant pas pour nous déplaire. On croisera donc des mélodies toutes droit sorties d’un écran titre de jeux NES, gentiment tabassée sur Tx Jammer ou d’une façon plus planante, en succession de couches, sur Last Exit To Fambridge. On plongera même dans la Nintendo écorchée vive et mélancolique (si si, cela existe) avec le très beau Summer Frosby
La réussite dans le genre sera incarnée par la folle Plenger : On commence dans un véritable maelstrom de breaks salaces et agressifs, lorgnant sur plusieurs minutes. Au moment où nos oreilles commencent à saturer, voir presque fatiguer, le titre bascule dans une folie 8bits joyeuse, avec une console crachant ses tripes qui va littéralement se faire violer par les coups de burins du sieur Ceephax. Imaginez Megaman 2 saccagé par un androïde. 8bits music ’til I die comme dirait l’autre…
Loin de la Drum linéaire que l’on trouve malheureusement de plus en plus, et se démarquant clairement d’un Squarepusher qui commence malheureusement à s’assagir, malgré son énorme talent, avec “Hello everything” et “Ultravisitor”, Ceephax nous balance avec ce Volume One une véritable correction, entre bombardements breakbeats, claviers crades et Gameboy désossées…
Et vous savez quoi ? Le Volume Two devrait sortir dans très peu de temps, soit quelques semaines seulement après le premier. S’il est du même calibre que celui-ci, il ne faudra plus, à ce rythme là dire “Ceephax, le petit frère de Squarepusher” mais “Squarepusher, le grand frère de Ceephax”. (Evidemment que j’en fais trop…)
Ce Volume One sera parfait pour tout ceux qui apprécient la Drum and Bass libertine, le Breakbeat fou, L’acid mélodique, les synthés bien appuyés, la musique 8bits malmenée ou tout simplement pour ceux qui aiment la musique électronique de malade.
Merde, c’est tout à fait pour vous en fait…

Je me trompe peut-être mais c’est un album chez Planet µ (celui là sera probablement encore meilleur que…ou bien prends-le comme étant le vol. 3?) et le “Megalift EP” chez Rephlex sortie il y a une semaine, je croyais que s’était lui, le Ep vinyle… Il y a tellement de productions et d’artists à suivre… iiiaaah!
À ne pas négliger le “12” de Duran Duran Duran, “Face Blast”, qui est un dj qui me manque dans ma discotech pour ma part. Triple Duran me semble similaire à Chevron…
