Comme pas mal de gens j’imagine, je ne connaissais pas du tout Popnoname. Pourtant, l’année derniere, son premier album avait renversé le coeur de pas mal de gens, ces derniers soutenant la beauté de la galette, qui semblait impérissable pour une décennie. Bon, il faut dire que depuis quelques années, avec tout ce qui était estampillé “Techno come from Allemagne”, je faisais vachement gaffe, presque traumatisé par une vague de disques impossibles à ingurgiter, souvent estampillés d’un cinglant Minimale qui me refroidissait assez souvent.
Quoi qu’il en soit, même si le disque précédant était parti, selon les dires, pour devenir un classique, Jens Uwe “Popnoname” Beyer a à peine mis un an pour nous balancer son petit frère, le bien nommé Surrounded By Weather.
Attention, que les effrayés (j’en fais parti) par mon premier paragraphe contenant les mots techno + minimale se détendent (en plus il n’y a pas Berlin, j’ai fais soft), Popnoname imprime une recette bien différente des susnommés. Le patronyme lui-même choisi par Beyer pourra parfaitement éclairer sur la direction musicale de son projet : Une pop sans nom. Une pop masquée, dissimulée, qui ne veut pas se faire repérer, car l’idée d’un mélange pop et techno fait encore plus peur aux puristes que le nouveau single de Hakimakli version fr. La musique de Popnoname, c’est bien de la Techno. Une Techno candide, aérienne, cristalline. Qui dérobe les mélodies de la pop, pour les fracasser sous un métronome monolithique. En plus, c’est Kompakt qui distribue le bonhomme. Appréhensions annihilées.
Il doit y avoir une mode cette année, consistant à insérer des formes géométriques colorées dans un décors quelconque, vu le nombre d’artworks reposant sur ce principes A l’instar donc de Fuck Buttons, El Guincho, School Of Seven Bells, Pyramids ou Steeple Remove, entre autre, Popnoname colle une curieuse structure aux faux airs de vaisseaux aliens en plein milieu d’un panorama décrépi. Le livret assurera l’originalité avec un assemblage de cartes postales formant une longue frise de d’horizons, de Moscou aux îles paradisiaques, en passant par Montreal. Les lyrics seront sur le verso de ces cartes, écris à la main, et à peine plus lisibles qu’une ordonnance faite par votre gentil médecin traitant.
Des Lyrics ? Oui, car Jens Beyer chante sur la plupart des titres. Comme si Sebastien Schuller tentait de fricoter avec Technasia. D’ailleurs à l’entame du premier titre, 2012, on se demanderai presque si un petit saloupiau de vendeur n’aurait pas échangé le disque dans votre dos pour se venger de ne plus pouvoir reluquer la pochette du cd de The Sounds, parce que ce dernier à été retourné au fournisseurs car les cds qui se vendent pas, faut pas déconner, on les dégagent des rayons de la Fnac. Oui donc, étonnement, ce Cd estampillé Italic / Kompakt commence comme un disque de Folk un peu enfumé, avec un mec qui chante, simplement accompagné d’une gratte, et noyé dans les échos. On se laisse bercer, à moitié convaincu par cette comptine, à dodeliner des fesses sur le béton d’une cours, avant qu’un gouffre s’ouvre subitement sous notre humble séant : après une petite saccade, le morceau part dans une Techno pure et cristalline, avec un beat bien appuyé mais cajoleur, le tout habillé de quelques choeurs bizarres et autres litanies enjouées. La surprise résidait dans la rupture totale, ce grand écart entre deux parties qui ne devraient normalement pas cohabiter. Alors le morceau va tranquillement se dérouler, nous laissant le temps de profiter des nuages bien moelleux sur lesquels nous rebondirons avant de s’envoler vers le soleil.
La première minute du disque sera d’ailleurs le seul passage du disque dénué de sonorités électroniques, et Touch veut nous le marteler, démarrant directement sur un rythme martial, et un Popnoname qui semble complètement s’étouffer à l’entame de son couplet, genre petit oisillon qui veut chanter du Radiohead après avoir fait le marathon de Paris. Mais le gars se rattrape bien, et aligne une phase tubesque à base de “Cash rich make a wish / Flash light make it right / Smile feel make it real” qui parasitera longtemps les têtes. Le morceau, format chanson, finira sur une ouverture assez belle, démultipliant l’organe de l’allemand pour en faire une mini chorale, le tout sur les nappes de synthés qui vont bien.
C’est bien Id Card qui finira de nous convaincre d’aller nous rouler à poil dans les cumulonimbus, très belle track, choisie à raison comme premier extrait de l’album (et qui résume parfaitement ce que l’on pourra trouver dessus). La boucle hypnotique et duveteuse qui tourne sans fin dans nos oreilles, secondée par une petite mélodie volatile, n’est pas sans rappeler certaines perles de The Field. Le pied est surpuissant, et la basse fini d’enterrer les oreilles. Beyer chante enfin d’une voix assurée, presque prophétique, alors que des choeurs semblent épouser nappes et beats. Hop tu fais le con dans un ciel bleu éclatant, à te gausser de voir le monde en miniature.
Même combat pour The Movement, jolie tech-pop éthérée, noyée dans des synthés cristallins, et teintes vaporeuses, longue introduction planante, avant que le titre parte dans un bon trip dancefloor, avec un rythme rehaussé et une bassline qui fera lever les bras de tous les gens passant dans le coin.
“Hey les mecs, je sais aussi faire de la techno qui flingue les bassins !” semble d’ailleurs nous dire Popnoname avec Crack, rouleau compresseur pour clubs, avec une base rythmique énorme, surplombée une boucle massive et hypnotique, qui va se déplier pendant les trois quart du morceau, se permettant de partir en grosses saccades histoire de filer le vertige. Des notes angéliques tenteront bien de s’immiscer dans la fin du conflit, mais sans jamais perturber ce dernier. Bourrin, le titre n’en est pas moins imparable.
Pas de chant, comme pour son camarade Perspective, plus long titre du disque (pointant dans les huit minutes), sorte de négatif du précédant, alignant une techno céleste et limpide, entre nappes cotonneuses et une harpe bizarre. Bref, azur et ses potes les nuages sont de retour. Et ce n’est pas l’énorme break un peu Trance, avec ses synthés presque “pute”, qui me feront dire le contraire. La deuxième partie du morceau est plus enlevée, plus cabossée, t’écrase le corps et le coeur juste avant de décoller. Bonheur.
Et après avoir privé deux de ses compositions de voix, Popnoname va charcler les rythmes de The Smallest Part pour proposer la seule et vraie pop-song du disque. Une voix noyée dans les reverbs, et surtout une sublime mélodie distillée par un synthé grave et claudiquant. Rien de plus. Ca n’avance pas, ça n’évolue presque pas, et pourtant le morceau est un vrai diamant, un intermède hors du temps, un vortex sonore. Je ne m’avancerai pas en disant que cette piste est la meilleur de l’album, vu qu’elle en prend le contre-pied (dans la forme tout du moins) mais on est pas loin.
Love proposera elle une très belle pièce d’electro-pop, en constante ascension, avec ce synthé grandissant, avançant par strate, nous balançant directement dans l’espace dès que le rythme reprend ses droits, et qu’une guitare acoustique vienne titiller la corde sensible.
La conclusion du disque, Storm en étonnera pas mal, en tapant dans le coté Trance soyeuse et extatique, encore une fois superbe, bardée de nappes et de scintillements, le morceau s’envolant à n’en plus finir, à griller la colonne vertébrale. Dès que Popnoname se met à chanter, le titre chavire, les claviers s’enroulent sur eux même, ça brille de partout, on court dans la neige avec un temps éclatant, à regarder ses potes éclater de rire en s’envoyant au ralenti des boules de neiges, avant de partir dans une spirale qui transformera votre canapé en véritable rampe de lancement destination Lune. On aura même le droit à un sympathique morceau caché, qui interviendra non pas après dix minutes de silence, ni quinze, ni même vingt, mais bien 25 minutes ! ( ?!?? le grand n’importe quoi…) Bref, cette petite pièce bonus instrumentale, très réussie au demeurant, genre électro dans une caverne de glace avec des anges dedans et un gros beat qui fait tout trembler, est évidemment condamnée à l’oubli.
Il faut quand même prévenir que le disque est un disque clairement Techno. Certes, matinée de pop et autres litanies rêveuses, avec un chant omniprésent, mais Techno quand même. Les réfractaires au genre risquent donc de ne clairement pas adhérer, même si le disque peut permettre d’appréhender le genre avec douceur et évasion. Voir découvrir une pop bien secouée, qui a rarement l’occasion de s’ébattre sur ce genre d’écrins. L’album est loin d’être monolithique, et si la tendance est clairement au vol plané béat au dessus de pics enneigés, il reste quand même plein de surprises, de mélodies en tiroirs et autres terrains escarpés. Il faut imaginer, dans une fête foraine, le plaisir de courir dans un labyrinthe de glace, sans jamais se prendre se prendre un seul miroir en pleine gueule.
A noter que la sortie digitale du disque (I-tunes, Beatport and co) est tronquée d’un titre, Crack n’étant dispo que sur la version cd, qui a en plus le plaisir exclusif de contenir la ghost track.
Surrounded By Weather n’est pas miraculeux en soi, mais reste une excellente galette, proposant un mélange rarement aussi bien réussi (L’addition pop + techno est souvent casse-gueule). Parfaite compagne d’un avant sommeil, la musique de Popnoname risque aussi de se frayer un chemin pour tous ceux qui veulent se planter dans un canapé avec des rêves pleins la tête, ou regarder le paysage défiler à bords d’un Tgv.
Voir adéquat pour déambuler tranquillement, proche du coma, dans une ville noire et cradingue, en s’amusant à souffler de la fumée avec sa bouche. Quand il fait froid.

TECHNO ouais je trouve presque ambient.Pour ceux qui connaissent pas grand chose a la techno,il pense que c est de la musique comme dans les garages de tuning,ou les compils qui passe en pub a la tv.C est quand meme vachement différent./je prefere parler musique electronique…IL y a toujours eu beaucoup de cds qui sont sortis de(techno)c est pourquoi il y a pas mal de truc pas terrible mais il y a toujours de bonne perle par exemple :stephan bodzin,james holden,pantha du prince,efdemin,pour ceux qui me passe par la tete.
Bravo pour ton blog très actif ces derniers temps le nouveau gang gang dance me tente assez.
