Whats the big fucking deal ? I’m the big fucking deal.
Plus vraiment besoin de décrire l’aura émanant de Tyler, The Creator et ses potes. Des tonnes d’albums (excellents ou anodins) balancés gratos, des concerts à hauts risques pour les arcades sourcilières, des clips de folie ayant pour seul but de s’imprimer à vie sur ta rétine… il y a de quoi faire depuis quelques temps avec ces malades. Odd Future, il faudrait quinze pages pour traiter du sujet. Mais le phénomène semble universel. Personnellement rentré en contact avec le crade son du crew lors la sortie du clip de Earl Sweatshirt, envoyé par un pote n’écoutant jamais de hiphop, mais me filant un lien en me hurlant (par mail) “putain t’as vu ce truc ? C’est dingue putain, c’est incroyable graaaaaah”. Et c’est effectivement avec cette vidéo ultra violente et malsaine que le buzz avait commencé à faire son trou. Le clip vole de facebooks en facebooks, de blogs en blogs, tout le monde se demande bien qui peuvent être ces tarés maso-drogués, en piochant au hasard des albums sur leur tumblr, débordant de morceaux gratos.
Alors on tombe sur Bastard, premier album de Tyler, The Creator, une claque énorme l’année dernière, avec des morceaux incroyables, mais qui comportait pourtant tous les défauts inhérents au disque de hiphop filé gratos : Un morceau sur deux pas génial, un essoufflement au fil du disque et surtout, une différence de volume/qualité d’enregistrement entre chaque morceau (ce que je hais). Malgré ces défauts plombant, ce Lp était (et reste) un Lp d’enfoiré, entre punchlines/lyrics cultes superbement écrites (malgré des sujets peu fédérateurs) et instrues qui démontaient drôlement. (Balancer « French » en soirée, c’est succès assuré). Bref, un Lp qui méritait amplement tout le foin fait autour (que l’on adhère ou pas), le tout subjugué par le charisme évident du type, entre branleur j’men-foutiste du fond de classe et fumeur de crack assassin à ses heures perdues.
Signer chez XL (pas le pire des gros labels, loin de là), cela fait grincer pas mal de dents. Mais l’américain avait finalement explosé le web grâce à Yonkers, lui aussi parfaitement maitrisé, augurant d’un Goblin plus ouvert, mais tout aussi bien torché que Bastard. Tyler The Creator devait vendre son cul en signant dans une maison de disque. A l’écoute de Goblin, on pourrait croire que cette signature a plutôt poussée le bonhomme à s’étouffer avec des antidépresseurs, seul dans sa cave, sans bouffe ni lumière, entouré de ses bouts de bidoches favoris.
Passer de mp3 gratos sur tumblr à un vrai lp sorti sur Xl, c’est se permettre de se déchirer sur le packaging. De ce coté là, pas de soucis, pour la version deluxe, on se tape un très beau digipack cartonné, avec un cd bonus 3 titres (Burger étant le morceau qui sort du lot), toutes les paroles dans le livret et un poster bien glauque.
Alors évidemment, dans ce disque, il y a Yonkers, tube incroyable, déflagration dérouillant autant le hiphop indé que le mainstream Mtv à sa sortie. Et elle mérite tous les honneurs, cette missive cradingue, avec son instrue folle, grinçante, sèche comme la mort. Et surtout la recette de Tyler, sublimée ici, avec sa voix gutturale, ses punchlines imparables ( “I’m a fucking walking paradox / No i’m not / Threesome with a fucking tryceratops” ) et son dialogue avec son psy/conscience. On sentait Tyler capable de tout casser. Mais des morceaux comme Yonkers, il n’y en aura pas d’autre dans le disque. Pas de hit évident, pas de banger, pas d’hymne de stade. Ce qui ne brise en rien la qualité du disque.
Car Goblin démarre parfaitement, et se déroule sans accroc pendant une bonne partie du Lp. L’ouverture Goblin pose parfaitement l’ambiance, bien qu’en le faisant d’une façon moins mémorable que l’intro de Bastard (impossible à enterrer, on se demande presque pourquoi Tyler voulait commencer de nouveau son disque avec un morceau de ce type, vu que cela ne pourrait pas soutenir la comparaison avec le premier essai). Radicals déboule brulot punk noisy, qui s’invite chez toi pour fracasser ta tv, chier sur tes murs et bruler ta baraque. She, le meilleur morceau du Lp avec Yonkers et Transyl, calme l’ambiance avec un refrain déclamé par l’excellent Frank Ocean. On va entendre les protestations, descendant Tyler The Creator sur le fait qu’il commence à vendre ses fesses, à faire du r’n’b pour minettes, morceau plutôt mielleux qui va bénéficier, c’est certain, d’une rotation active sur les chaines musicales. Ouai. Hey, les paroles ? Certes, ça va tourner à la radio. Mais ça parle d’un stalker qui se masturbe en matant une demoiselle avant de violer son cadavre dans la foret. Mignon, le paradoxe est parfaitement orchestré, on a hâte de voir ça à la tv.
Je parlais de Transylvania plus haut. Ce morceau, c’est le seul, avec Yonkers (décidemment) à avoir la rage de Bastard. Le seul morceau à te donner envie de hurler les paroles en écoutant le tout. Donner des coups de poings dans le vent, à réciter les punchlines en yaourt. Parce que le refrain est dantesque, hardcore à l’extreme, digne d’un French. Ou sa conclusion méchamment cathartique “Bite her in the fucking neck / Bite her in the fucking neck / Bottom of the fucking lake / Bottom of the fucking lake !” que tu as envie de baver en filant des coups de pompes à toutes tes peluches tendrement installées sur ton lit. Ce morceau EST violence. Dangereux.
Tron Cat, plongée minimaliste dans un hiphop dark et franchement expérimental, te balance 6 minutes de punchlines folles sur une électronique dégueulasse et arythmique. Ce morceau, c’est aller faire un examen cardiaque, et se retrouver sur le siège avec le praticien te hurlant des insultes pour te faire sauter le palpitant. “I’m awesome, and I fuck dolphins”. Je veux bien le croire. Le mec te parle de meurtres en mode ultra-graphique, il vaut mieux éviter d’écouter ça le matin. Son psy en est tout retourné à la fin du morceau. Dans cette brochette de bombinettes indiscutables, tu as aussi l’excellent Her, au texte étonnant pour un morceau de Tyler, qui pourrait passer pour une traduction anglaise d’un morceau de Fuzati sur Vive La Vie. Et la charge débilo-bontempi Sandwitches, morceau bien cool, mais un peu caduc et inoffensif à partir du moment ou l’on a écouté la perf en live chez Jimmy Fallon.
Et voilà, que le disque, comme Bastard, s’écroule sur son sprint final. Un quasi sans faute qui loupe la marche dans son dernier tiers. Fish est long, bordelique, pas dingue. Analog et Bitch Suck Dick sont dégueux, Window complément assommante (malgré un twist final plutôt marrant) et Au79 inutile (surtout à coté des exercices de Jet Age Of Tomorrow… disque qui contient le meilleur morceau all-time avec Tyler dessus). Heureusement que le génial Golden viendra conclure le disque avec un morceau apocalyptique, épique, entre chœurs religieux, beat nécrosé, paroles ultra violentes sur les deux dernières années de l’intéressé. Tyler se remet à pêter les plombs comme un dératé, et cela sonne de nouveau juste et naturel, à la Yonkers (encore). Le dernier couplet est dingue, un des meilleurs passages du Lp.
Tyler avait prévenu que ceux qui avaient aimé le premier disque allaient honnir ce nouveau Lp. On pensait tous que le mec allait faire un truc moins glauque, moins violent, plus grand public que Bastard. Et bien à mon grand étonnement, c’est le contraire. Là où Bastard débordait de morceaux qui déboitent, de bombes en puissances, de hits vicieux et viciés, on ne trouve dans Goblin que Yonkers et.. euh… Transylvania, pour démonter les soundsystems de club. Goblin est noir, dur, difficile d’accès, une vraie plongée dans un esprit malade, tout en étant peut être moins pertinent, plus calculé, plus factice que Bastard.
Goblin n’a plus la fougue de son grand frère. D’un point de vu lyrics tout d’abord. Les punchlines sont toujours là, franchement graves, hallucinantes de maitrise. Les thèmes sont toujours aussi hardcore. Certes, dans les grandes lignes, les lyrics de Goblin sont bien mieux travaillés, plus riches. Mais quand on veut vraiment regarder les dans les détails, il y a quelques écueils : Le disque regorge d’explications, d’excuses, de positionnements, là ou Tyler nous crachait simplement sa haine auparavant. On ne sait pas comment prendre l’intro de Radicals, la conclusion de Sandwitches… On croirait parfois entendre une déclinaison banale du Marshall Mathers Lp.
Parce que justement, Eminem le faisait sur son disque, et cela marchait parfaitement. C’était même plus que dérangeant, entre humour noir, vraies pulsions meurtrières et positionnement marketing. Les justifications de Tyler, elles sont un peu maladroites, mal amenées, là où Eminem frôlait le génie sur Kill You, ses Skit ou l’intro de Criminal, phénoménale et culte, que Tyler semble essayer de décliner pâlement. Il faut dire qu’Odd Future se retrouve dans une situation avec le public qui n’avait justement pas resurgie depuis… Marshall Mathers. Le mec se débrouillait mieux avec un simple « I didnt mean to offend anyone… alright, I’m lying » à la fin de “Seven”, sur son premier disque, qui semblait résumer parfaitement l’approche de Tyler sur sa musique.
Et si Tyler est toujours aussi balaise pour t’expliquer comment il va violer ta grand-mère et son iench à l’aide d’un coton tige, d’un ciseau, d’un briquet et d’un micro-onde, le discours sur la religion et l’école semble cette fois plus empâté, moins frappant, moins jusqu’au-boutiste. On préférait les blasphèmes ultra-violents de Bastard, les lignes impossibles à assumer, qui avaient quand même plus de gueule.
Musicalement aussi, le bonhomme a foutrement évolué, car si il n’y a plus ce problème de “50% de mon album sont des prods enregistrées dans ma cuisine avec le bouton de volume j’aime le changer à chaque track”. Mais le tout a quand même clairement moins de punch, et manque de “Seven, French, VCR, Slow It Down…”, voir même de morceaux mélodiques à la “Bastard” ou “Pigs Fly”, qui étaient franchement… beaux. Hey, je suis en train de me plaindre du fait que l’album est trop experimental ? Non, juste qu’il manque d’un ou deux coups dans le bide en plus. Et dieu sait que Odd Future sait en donner, des coups dans le bide. Avec les intestins qui roulent sur le bitume et tout le toutim. Goblin ne te donne pas envie de gueuler. Car Bastard, c’était ça, l’envie de gueuler, de scander les lyrics. De hurler biiiitch et swaaag dans ta piaule à chaque insultes des zozos d’Odd Future.
Bon attention, l’album reste mortel hein, si on retire cette dernière partie de disque qui se foire mollement (et longuement). J’ai toujours autant de plaisir à entendre la voix folle de Tyler débiter ses horreurs écrites à l’or fin, certaines tracks sont absolument mortelles (Transylvania donc, brulot gothico-mysogine fou, l’énorme She, Her, Radicals, Tron Cat… sans oublier, évidemment, le tube incontestable Yonkers). Les synthés crevés sont toujours aussi pertinents et bien placés. Bref, du bon boulot. Si objectivement, Goblin est bien mieux taillé que le premier lp, Bastard (malgré tous ses défauts) reste pour moi indépassable, dans une autre galaxie face aux autres sorties Odd Future. Difficile d’expliquer pourquoi, mais mon cœur reste attaché à ce rejeton dégueu et gueulard, plutôt qu’à cette nouvelle livraison dépressive, étouffante, d’excellente qualité, mais au final plus convenue. Le Lp reste étonnamment à l’opposé de ce que l’on pouvait attendre de Tyler, avec sa nouvelle aura grand public. Mieux branlé, massif, écrasant, mais avec pourtant moins d’impact.
Reste qu’avec ce très bon Goblin, le mec aime prendre des risques, et c’est plus que salutaire en ce moment.

Il m’a plutôt déçu finalement aussi ce premier LP moi en fait, Bastard restant LA claque qui me laisse encore la joue rouge. Ici on a principalement l’impression d’entendre une compilation de B Sides de ce même Bastard : moins puissant, trop long, moins percutant et pertinent. En fait j’ai peur que le son d’OFGWKTA ne finisse par tourner en rond un peu trop rapidement.
Moins de reminiscences indus aussi, façon Dälek comme sur French. Ce qui n’empêche pas un paquet de tracks de tuer la gueule, mais un paquet plutôt qu’un album… Ca déçoit forcément. En espérant qu’il continuera à lâcher des trucs sur tumblr, le bonhomme semble être plus créatif en faisant ses conneries avec ses potes qu’en sortant un truc consistant sur un vrai label.
Ce type a plus la carrure pour faire des bons EP que des vrais disques. Pour moi dans Bastard et Goblin une moitié de titres tiennent la route et me retourne la tête, le reste est juste ronge cerveau.
On est loin des meilleurs Jak Progresso type Pestilance ou Melodie for Children ou le bonhomme resté presque cohérent sur la longueur avec a peu prés le même mélange de beats indus/expérimental et de lyrics de cramé.

Dodo ==> Bizarrement, je trouve que le seul album “complet” labellisé Odd Future, et qui se tient de bout en bout (sans etre le meilleur), c’est le Ali de Mike G. Tous les autres ont des morceaux énormes et d’autres plutot anodins.
Pas sur qu’ils tournent en rond, il faut juste qu’ils s’ouvrent un petit peu… Ou repartent dans les delires sans caclul ni pression (ce qui risque d’etre difficile maintenant…)
