Je n’avais pas parlé d’un disque comme ça depuis quelques temps, si l’on excepte les derniers Venetian Snares. Le plus drôle, c’est que je suis passé au moins dix fois devant ce disque, abandonné tristement au fond d’un bac Fnac. Dix fois que je me dis qu’il faudrait se laisser tenter par ce disque Planet-Mu à la pochette fort jolie, sans jamais franchir le pas au final. Appréhension de tomber sur un disque de Dubstep un peu pataud, genre constituant le genre de prédilection du Label en 2007 ? Attention happé par des sorties clinquantes en tête de gondole ? Un peu des deux. C’est après une discussion enflammée que je me suis laissé tenté par ce Frog Pocket, artiste qui m’était totalement inconnu. Mais mes oreilles avaient besoin d’un bon disque de Drum/Drill and Bass. Celle qui vous fait vibrer, qui marie à merveille chaos et pureté absolue, qui vous envoie directement dans la stratosphère après vous avoir lacéré la gueule à coup de couteaux.
Je ne m’attendais pas à être aussi bien servi.
En regardant de plus près, je me demande encore comment je n’ai point pu craquer sur ce disque avant. Il est pourtant évident que cet épouvantail, qui subira une fin tragique à l’intérieur du livret, ne pouvait cacher qu’un ensemble atypique et prenant.
Bon je dis ça, pourtant Frog Pocket, n’a rien de vraiment atypique. A l’écoute de ce disque, il est même inévitable de faire la comparaison avec trois ténors : Venetian Snares, The Flashbulb et Squarepusher. A dire vrai, certaines pistes auraient pu être placée dans certains albums des précités sans dépareiller une seconde. Mais l’anglais sait maîtriser une donnée qui place son disque en orbite : la montée en puissance. Le talent pour construire de vrais catapultages vers les cieux, des ascenseurs vers le paradis. Qui ne se prive pas pour faire durer l’ascension sur 7 ou 8 minutes.
Il suffit de se plonger sur le premier gros titre du disque, Rig Of The Jarkness pour comprendre le fonctionnement de l’album dans ses grandes lignes, mais aussi de l’ampleur de la baffe, monumentale à la première écoute. S’ouvrant sur un gros rythme Drum and Bass bien clair, presque scolaire, surplombé d’une guitare distillant tranquillement sa mélodie, le titre bascule dans le synthétique avec l’arrivée d’un clavier superbe, très IDM, bien cristallin, histoire de vous balancer illico presto dans les étoiles. On écarte les bras, on ferme les yeux, et on se laisse aller à filer entre les étoiles, en surplombant la terre d’un air hautain. Pause, vide astral, seul l’écho de la mélodie est perceptible. Une sorte d’oasis avant que la cavalcade reprenne à fond les ballons. La mélodie vous arrache le coeur, les beats acérés vous le lacère à la vitesse de la lumière. Ca monte, ça monte, ça accélère, on perd pied, one ne pige plus rien, on étoufferait presque, c’est sublime. Le paroxysme est atteint, on s’attend à ce que le titre échoue dans les réverbérations de rigueur.
Peine perdu, Frog Pocket fait vriller le rythme, ce dernier explose, exulte, se tord, crisse, hurle. Jusqu’au basculement final absolument ahurissant : Une vague indescriptible, un Tsunami sonore débarque, balaie tout, rase la terre entière pour former un magma affolant, grondant comme la mort elle-même, simulant le plus violent des tremblements de terre sans jamais nous agresser. Une plongée dans l’enfer. Hallucinant. Je sais pas, imaginez une centaine de platine jetée les unes sur les autres, avec un rouleau compresseur pour les écraser, des gens autour qui hurlent à la mort, un vaisseau spatial qui tombe sur le tout avec Merzbow aux commandes, avant que la planète elle-même explose dans un fatras insensé, avec de la lave, des météorites, des dinosaures mutants et tout. Voila vous avez saisi. Alors que les dernières secondes laissent vivre un larsen réconfortant, on se retrouve complètement con, à chercher une poche d’air pour reprendre son souffre, à regarder si des marques rouges vives ne sont pas gravées sur votre cou, après s’être pris ce goulot d’étranglement long de 9 minutes.
Même combat pour Windy Goule qui nous balance un titre semblant tout droit sortir d’une galette de Squarepusher. Drum super speed, mélodie fluette toute candide, entre synthé et chants angéliques, et c’est reparti pour une montée en puissance à flinguer la colonne vertébrale de bonheur. Même structure que précédemment, on fait la course, on calme le jeu, et on repart dans une chevauchée de folie. Le rythme presque académique se dédouble, s’entrelace sur lui-même, formant une vraie armée de breaks fous, le tout surplombé par une nappe colossale. Le genre de conclusion utilisée en fin de film, l’apothéose, celle où le héros butte tout le monde la larme à l’oeil, avec des colombes, des filles qui ont peur, des méchants qui hurlent, des balles qui fusent au ralenti et des plans épileptiques.
Mais Frog Pocket, en parallèle à ces folles envolées, aime aussi les cordes pincées, les harpes et les atmosphères enchanteresses. Une comparaison devient encore toute naturelle. Lady Hunter Blair, aurait pu directement sortit du fabuleux Kirlian Selection de The Flashbulb sans dépareiller une seconde. Tout comme le sublime Helpy staircase, où un semblant de harpe en cristal déverse une triste et belle litanie, en se faisant malmenée par un beat Hip-hop. Les violons débarquant dans le dernier tiers finiront de vous achever bien proprement.
On défriche, on défriche, et une nouvelle référence nous saute à la gueule : Aaron Funk A.k.a Venetian Snares. Période « Rosscz Czillag » précisément. Impossible de ne pas penser à Szerencsetlen, deuxième piste du fameux album aux pigeons. Il en reprend presque les mêmes violons menaçants, qui appuient leur agressivité de la même façon que chez Mr Funk. Evidemment, des breaks fous et tranchants charcutent le tout. On évitera le copier coller avec une guitare rock qui va supplanter des cordes reléguées au rang de pleureuses en horizon. On lui préférera le sublime Dungeon Hill, qui après une longue introduction à la harpe, va laisser un violon se complaire dans le sublime, virevoltant sous les assauts Drill&bass, essuyant tant bien que mal les attaques, partant dans une mélopée à vous dresser les cheveux sur la tête. Là où Venetian Snares tente de saloper la musique classique de la plus belle des manières, Frog Pocket va s’attaquer à des cordes qui sonnent plus Europe de L’est, pour un résultat tout aussi aberrant, avec un final encore pétrifiant de puissance et de beauté, crevant sur une petite boite à musique d’une mélancolie poignante, après nous avoir ravagé le cerveau par une rythmique en 16/16. Monstrueux.
Le Frog Pocket, multi instrumentiste de son état semble d’ailleurs tenter une approche assez inédite dans le genre, car en live, au lieu de massacrer un sample en direct, préfère lancer sa rythmique pour jouer du violon dessus comme un hystérique. Ca promet.
Et c’est quand il est plus difficile de coller des références que Frog Pocket nous lamine peut être encore plus la mâchoire. Bo’Arigh est juste insane. Peut être la structure la plus défoncée du disque, véritable maelstrom industriel qui pétarade dans tous les coins, qui hurle, se hérisse sans contrôle apparent, pour laisser échapper un synthé Analordien, répétitif à en mourir, laissant perler 9 notes à pleurer, pour se faire littéralement violer dans un final d’une violence inouïe.
Super redondante que cette chronique, vu que les 3/4 des pistes pourraient se résumer à des montées sublimes, des explosions graduelles, qui s’allument tel des orgasmes. On sent le truc venir, il pointe, il submerge, et il est impossible de ne pas se laisser prendre dans la vague, de ne pas suffoquer par tant de sublime, de grandiloquence et de maîtrise.
Attention, il est vraiment clair que Frog Pocket propose à été mainte et mainte fois proposé auparavant. Le mimétisme est parfois flagrant avec The Flashbulb ou Venetian. Frog Pocket n’invente rien, et se complet presque dans le fan service du « je fais monter la sauce au maximum pour tout faire péter au final, le tout accompagné d’une mélodie tristounette et sublime histoire de brouiller les coeurs »
Ouai c’est ça, ce Come On Primates… C’est du Fan Service pour tout amateur de Drill / Drum / Breakcore en manque de sensation, en se permettant même de jouer tous les instruments utilisés dans l’album. Et comme tout Fan Service, les références pleuvent. Mais le tout est tellement bien foutu, tellement maîtrisé, tellement beau, tellement jouissif, qu’il devient un disque ultra-recommandé pour TOUT amateur des artistes précités, en manque d’une bonne claque musicale dans la gueule.
Cela tombe bien, Frog Pocket vous en file douze d’un coup.
