Je parlais de trains il y a peu. Sur le fait que j’aimais les salades maigrelettes du Wagon restaurant. Intéressant. Mais ce que j’aime particulièrement dans ces tubes de métaux estampillés SNCF, c’est poser ma tête contre la fenêtre et voir le paysage défilé en écoutant de la musique diffuse, pénétrante, évasive, et accessoirement, belle. Qu’elle soit violente, calme ou expérimentale, il faut qu’elle ralentisse le temps, vous enfourne le corps et le coeur dans un drap brumeux, ouaté. On regarde les plaines, les arbres, les bâtiments défiler d’une façon completement absconse, entrecoupés de vides psychiques, dans un état semi comateux. Je m’endors souvent dans un train d’ailleurs, à trop me laisser bercer par ce mouvement perpétuel agréable et sécurisant. Avec un peu de chance, ce genre d’état annihile presque le mouflard qui hurle en fond de voiture, chose inhérente à chaque long trajet.
Il arrive, au détour d’un champ de maïs et autres étendues occupées par de jolies vaches gambadantes, que l’on croise un Ovni virevoltant dans le ciel, rapidement éclipsé par la vitesse du Tgv. Résultat d’une saturation musicale résonnant violemment dans vos oreilles ou réelle visite impromptu de nos voisins martiens, difficile à dire.
Ce qui, par contre, est assuré, c’est qu’avec ce Pyramids, le ciel risque vite de se transformer en véritable champ de bataille pour une armada d’humanoïdes à la peau verte ayant plus d’yeux sur le corps que de poils de cul.
Derrière cette drôle de jolie pochette, aux artworks interieurs qui tuent, se cache un groupe qui, justement, se cache bien. Même chez Hydra Head, (label abritant de grosses têtes comme Jesu, SunO))), Boris, Dillinger Escape Plan ou Neurosis), on ne sait pas vraiment d’où sort cette formation, en ne rencontrant qu’une fois un seul mec du groupe, pour les procédures de rigueur. Le groupe semble sorti de nulle part, avec aucune trace de concerts ou disques derriere eux…
Les Pyramids semblent bien mystérieux et allumés, même pour leur maison mère, sans pour autant cultiver le secret absolu à la Burial. Des originaux simplement, qui ne se cacheront pas pour faire leurs lives. (Attention, ce groupe Pyramids est à ne pas confondre avec les The Pyramids un groupe, parait-il, de punk rock.)
C’est en lançant Sleds que l’on comprend rapidement ce dont je voulais parler plus haut. Mur de guitares étirées et ralenties, flottant dans vos oreilles comme le ferait un nuage de fumée, le titre étonne par la voix super haut perché du chanteur, qui hulule au milieu du marasme. On croit au début entendre le chant du morceau Derek de Animal Collective en slow motion, avant de filer sur quelque chose de très Sigur Ros. Et rien de plus. Une centaine de guitares, mille peut être, qui grondent, qui tourbillonnent autour d’une prière déclamée par une âme errante. Steppes arides ou caverne de glace, difficile de trancher. Une seule certitude, on est seul, planté au milieu d’un No Man’s Land, en train de contrôler les derniers spasmes provoqués par une mort certaine. Le titre est très beau, frise le sublime, et ouvre parfaitement l’album. Il nous balance surtout en pleine face un jugement hâtif : “Ok, ce disque, ça va être du shoegaze pur et dur. Je me calle dans mon canapé et je me prépare à flotter dans les limbes de l’inconscience”
Et là, c’est le drame. Enfin la surprise plutôt. Car Igloo s’il se couvre du même manteau de guitare effarant, se retrouve pilonné par une rythmique acharnée, ultra violente, qui emprunte autant au Black Metal qu’à la Techno industrielle. Pourtant, rien n’est agressif. Tout est en retrait, comme si vous étiez posté en haut d’une montagne, à regarder une ville se faire écraser par un tapis de bombe, très très loin. On assiste à la naissance d’un vrai alien, d’un mille-feuille musical sans précédant :
Les guitares, massives, ahurissantes, nous plongent dans un Shoegaze lunaire, décharné, détruisant tout repaire. Le rythme flirte avec l’épileptique, tout en étant étouffé par une cathédrale de nappes qui se fondent dans du bruit blanc. On ne pourra même pas distinguer si le tout est fait avec trois cent guitares ou une bourrasque de vent amplifiée par mille. A moins que cela ne soit le chant de zombies affamés revenant sur terre en hurlant. Et au milieu de tout ça, un chanteur habité par la mort, qui se lance tranquillement une petite litanie pop, comme si Radiohead venait se taper tranquillou un petit refrain directement en enfer.
Au secours.
Encore completement retourné, hébété, voir détruit par ce 38tonnes pris en pleine face, The Echo Of Something Lovely se pointe la gueule enfarinée, renouant avec la beauté retenue de l’ouverture, se reposant sur des nappes cristallines superposées en immeuble, et une mélodie semblant survenir d’un manège encore en marche, enfoui sous la banquise, gamins figés à jamais dans un dernier sourire morbide. Tu peux même jouer ce titre le jour de ton mariage si tu es un ours polaire mangeur d’eskimos gothiques. On sent des battements sourds pointer au loin, mais ces derniers passent au dessus de nos caboches comme des paraboles. On se balade dans une église ensevelie sous la neige, avec pour seuls visiteurs des squelettes prisonniers dans leur cercueil de glace.
On pense alors saisir ce Pyramids. Sauf que le tétanisant End Resolve débarque pour nous fracasser la gueule en mille. Deux secondes. Allez trois. Seules les trois premières secondes semblent normales. Apres, c’est plongé en apnée dans une piscine emplie de coton (agréable) où s’ébattent des piranhas sanguinaires (pas agréable). Heureusement, tu fais l’amour avec plein de gens (agréable) mais l’organisateur de la partouze décide dans une crise d’hystérie de tous vous cramer au napalm (pas agréable).
Un mur pachydermique de guitare et de nappes, à s’arracher la colonne vertébrale tellement c’est beau. Des saturations suffocantes qui te donnent l’impression d’être coincé sous une bombe atomique. Une voix hallucinée, qui halète d’une voix aigue, entre orgasme malsain et tube Mtv façon Britney la slave pour toi. Le plus drôle, c’est que le mec part au final dans un chant à te filer la chair de poule de ton été, tellement il s’envole genre Rock de stade. Sinon, il y a aussi une rythmique façon AK-47 déréglée, qui fait trembler le moindre centimètre de tes intestins. Et je ne parle pas de la montée finale, qui cramera n’importe quel neurone encore en marche après une telle syncope musicale. Le plus frappant, c’est que tout est tellement parfaitement dosé que l’on est jamais bousculé, jamais mis à mal. On vole, on est bien, l’air béat, on plane. Au dessus d’un brasier sans fin. Immense morceau.
Pour résumer, ce titre, c’est Sigur Ros vs My Bloody Valentine vs Une usine à métaux vs Merzbow vs Mayhem vs Radiohead vs Du vent à 250km/h dans un tunnel sans lumière.
Le groupe va même pousser le vice de noyer un morceau de Pop Blues dans son maelstrom étourdissant avec This House is like any other world. C’est très drôle. Imaginez Chris Isaak prendre sa gratte, mettre son chapeau de cow-boy, et commencer à chanter de sa voix de velours son diamant Wicked Games. Toutes les filles sont en pamoison, les hommes se redressent, les briquets s’allument, les verges se tendent, l’atmosphère est tamisée, on danse un slow en se laissant bercer par le crooner d’un soir, lové contre la personne que l’on pense pouvoir aimer pour toute une vie. Mais voila qu’une bande de désaxés débarquent avec un hélico, se servent du bruit de l’hélice comme rythme en l’amplifiant jusqu’à overdose, et tirent dans la foule pour rigoler, le tout en tapant sur une dizaine de guitares branchées sur pédale à effet. Genre le groupe Hanatarash qui débarque en plein bal de promo avec un bulldozer, histoire de mettre l’ambiance. Ils se taperont d’ailleurs les fonds de verre avec Hillary, véritable réminiscence post-traumatique industrielle.
Quand à Ghost, c’est encore le morceau Pop qui va se faire enfiler par un matraquage de fûts épileptique, une couche glacière de nappes shoegaze façon apesanteur zéro et des guitares qui montent percer les nuages, la stratosphère et les étoiles, pour virer violemment de bord et t’envoyer directement chez le diable en personne. On est attaché à une chaise, les yeux bandés, et jeté dans un ravin sans fond, avec vent qui souffle à t’en faire exploser les tympans. Mais la morphine afflue dans nos veines, donc c’est cool, on apprécie le voyage, presque apaisant ( ?!?).
Le premier titre du disque était clairement le seul à pouvoir être affilié à un style sans hésitation, le Shoegaze, sans que celui si ne soit plongé dans un empilage presque excessif de couches sonores. 1, 2, 3, concluant Pyramids fera de même, en étant un (presque) pur morceau de Black Metal, avec sa guitare acérée, sa rythmique de folie et ses grognements semi-hurlés à la clef. Sauf que bon, faut pas déconner ici aussi, le tout sera auréolé d’une enveloppe sonore à faire flipper le producteur de Phil Collins. Quand à la voix, elle n’émane pas d’un chanteur un peu énervé par pleins de trucs, mais bien d’une armée entière de trolls drogués au Lsd placés dans une cuvette sans issue.
Avant de se lancer dans une conclusion qui n’aura pas énormément de sens, il faut préciser que l’album est vendu avec un deuxième disque qui propose des remix/relectures des morceaux de l’album par des invités d’Hydra Head et consorts. Bon je ne suis pas très amateur de ce genre de trucs, les remix étant parfois bien gadget, mais on ne va pas rechigner sur un disque bonus.
On peut néanmoins affirmer que le groupe Jesu signe de loin le meilleur remix du lot, en transformant littéralement The echo of something lovely, devenant de toute beauté, s’étirant sur presque sept minutes, nous emmenant sur des terrains electronica absolument sublimes, proche de M83, et écrasant l’original à coup de talons, sans hésitation. James Plotkin s’attaque au même titre avec presque autant de réussite, rajoutant un petit coté organique au morceau avec ce semblant de piano, et fait muter le cramé 1, 2, 3 en véritable attentat industriello-hardcore. Le reste oscille entre le le bon ( Celui de la triplette Toby Driver / Ted Parsons / Marston ou de Blut aus Nord) et l’inutile.
Difficile, vraiment difficile de décrire un disque pareil. Du Métal et de la pop passés à la moulinette Shoegaze. Ou le contraire. Ou les deux. Voir carrément autre chose. Le son est en plus tellement massif, tellement imposant, mais dans le même mouvement tellement aérien qu’il forme une mixture presque inédite dans nos tympans. J’ai beau chercher, je ne vois pas vraiment de comparaisons, d’équivalent pour imager le propos.
Etonnement, les chansons sont assez courtes pour le genre, mais elles sont tellement foisonnantes que le tout passe comme une lettre à la poste. (Même si j’e verrais bien une ou deux pistes s’étirer sur 8 ou 9 minutes…) On reçoit mille informations à la seconde dans nos oreilles, tout en ayant l’impression de errer dans une cathédrale grande comme le monde, hanté par les cadavres de tous les rockeurs du monde, bien décidés à jouer le même accord de guitare en communion.
C’est du Shoegaze, oui. Mais ce dernier est tellement massif et ravagé que le Loveless de My Bloody Valentine, à coté, c’est du Shakira. Rassurez vous, je ne parle pas en terme d’émotion ou de qualité hein, mais de façon factuelle, en prenant le “son” en lui-même : Ce disque nous donne l’impression de se prendre un train en pleine figure couplé avec une avalanche et six moteurs de Boeing 747.
Disque rare, grosse curiosité ou simple marasme inextricable, à voir. Reste que ce dernier renferme de superbes compositions, alternant plénitude totale et terres dévastées, sans jamais user d’artifices violents et dérangeants. (Et sans oublier le sublime remix par le groupe Jesu, argument de poids vu la beauté du morceau ) Enfin si, la violence est bien présente, mais Pyramids la noie dans un ras de marée de nappes et une muraille de guitares cristallines, désamorçant donc toute tentative d’agression frontale. Je dis bien frontale, car si l’agression est évitée, il n’en reste pas moins une forte perte d’équilibre, une annihilation complète des repères, et un sentiment de déstabilisation frôlant le sadisme.
Pyramids est un peu au Métal ce que Fuck Buttons est à la musique électronique : Un indescriptible mélange entre beauté pure et chaos total, jouant sur les extrêmes avec une insolence presque autiste.

Throught the hourglass, je ne sais pas si c’est le même ou pas ( apparemment non ) et c’est du Post Hardcore ( qui devrait t’interresser ).
D’ailleurs gonflant, dans mon itunes, deux groupes au même nom.
Comme un groupe qui s’appelle Fugazi, rien à voir avec le groupe de Ian McKaye.
Et recemment, un chanteur sous le nom de Zao, le même nom que le groupe de post hardcore……
Non c’est pas le même, de “Pyramids” traité ici, il n’y a que ce “Pyramids”…
C’est vrai que c’est assez compliqué, qurtout qu’ici, le titre de l’album est en self titled, ce qui n’arrange pas les affaires… Il faut se fier au label en fait, Hydra Head, dans le cas present…
J’ai eu recemment une fausse joie en voyant un disque de “The avalanches”, qui est en fait une simple réédition d’un groupe de rock, et pas un nouveau skeud des auteurs de “since I left you”

End Resolve est dantesque (l’adjectif est mal trouvé mais fait toujours bien), j’écouterai sûrement le reste du disque.
Vraiment original cet album ! Mais j’ai pas encore déterminé si je trouvais ça excellent ou complètement raté… En tout cas j’ai quand même du mal avec les blast beats et le chant Musesque… Mais y a de superbes passages.
